I have to say that the pics I've seen for most people's cellars are great uses of overflow closets, basement cubbies and the like. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment on a high floor in NYC where heat easily makes all rooms 78+ degrees in the summer. My pantry and bar just ain't gonna cut it any more.

I was looking into renting a climate-controlled room at a storage facility close to my place. It's damn pricey, but it may be my only alternative. I know there are services for storing wine bottles specifically, but nothing for beer.

For those of you in apartments, how do you combat the heat?

I'm moving into a larger apartment sometime in the next few months...pretty much gutting it and had dreams of installing a dedicated beverage cooler in a corner of the room. I don't even want to think about the energy bill though.

I live in NYC also and I have a 220 bottle Vintage Keeper wine cellar that I use for my beer and wine. It cost me $1300 ten years ago. It does the job but it's not cheap. And it adds about $15 a month to my electric bill.

Yeah I have a similar problem with my apt in Northern Virginia. Utilities are included so power isn't the issue but I'm from Southern Louisiana and I like it hot, I never set the AC below 80 and often I just turn it off. Eventually I'll just have to get a 2nd temp controlled fridge.

Not sure what size cellar you need, but I bought a used Haier wine fridge on craigslist and just took out the wine racks and replaced it with one piece of plywood. Works great and you can set a target temp. It can hold up to 16 cork&caged 750s up top and probably another 20-25 bottles below. I keep mine at 54 and it's been great. Old beer fridge vs wine fridge in the pic [IMG]
