I just tried the wolf for the first time and expected dreadnaught with some slight differences and was very disappointed! It was almost gasoline meets chocolate milk nothing crisp or complex about it. I suppose it's possible it was bad but an Indiana beer I'm in Indiana? I'm not willing to spend the 12 bucks to Try. Please I need some flavor descriptions or opinions on this
Wow, gotta be bad. This is one of my favorites. Try it again. I liken it a little to the Barleywines I like, a little boozy, definitely hoppy but no, it is not crisp like Dreadnaught, which I really like as well. EDIT: I cried a little when I read your post
This one definitely must be acquired FRESH or else it turns pretty quickly IMO. I will only buy this one directly from the source because I just don't know how long it has been sitting on store shelves with no bottle dating.
Do places have it on tap? I'm sure any place on tap would let me try a splash. This brewery is worth trying again but at 12 bucks a bottle to find out its just not for me I'd rather not.
Agreed, had to be bad. I had it in a bottle share of ones I brought back from vacation and it stayed fresh and was a favorite of the tasting. We were split decision between that and Dreadnaught but both were excellent. Definitely try it again if you get the chance.
Both beers are superb when fresh. A little maltier than Dreadnaught, but it should still kick you in the mouth with hops. I'm guessing bad or old bottle.
I don't get the chocolate thing... even if it was old or infected there's no reason it should taste like or remind you of chocolate milk. That aside, the only place I would get this is on tap at the brewery. Way too many undated old bottles sitting around the area.
I have to agree with the OP...I drank half and the other went down the drain. Just waaaay too malty and too heavy.
Chocolate milk and gasoline? I'd like to think you are exaggerating a little. In my experience, APW and Dreadnaught are both VERY VERY good. I have only had them very fresh though. They fly off the shelves here in Ohio.
Does anyone else remember when it was the old label? and it was poorly filtered? ....AND DELICIOUS!?!
I've had APW on tap and thought it was great. Buying FFF beers anywhere but the brewery is risky given the lack of bottle dates. A local shop just got Munsterfest, Broo Doo, Behemoth, and Dreadnaught. 3 of the 4 are clearly out of season and Dreadnaught is a year round so there is no possible way to tell when that was bottled. The fact that they won't bottle date is almost stubborn arrogance IMO. It's like "we don't give a damn when the beers were bottled, we'll ship them even if they aren't fresh and people will still buy them."
It had to be an old bottle. I see it sit on shelves in multiple stores and Im guessing most people arent willing to drop $11-12 on a 22oz bottle , especially if they haven't tried it before/don't know how old it is. My advice would be to check the bottom of the bottle next time, they usually develop tons of sediment with older bottles, OR get it straight from the source. Places do get it on draft on occasion but it's not as common as finding Gumball/Alpha
