Are all Hazy IPAs mostly the same?

I’ve always gotten this from some hazy ipas. The first batch of City of Dreams I had in the can was undrinkable to me. The draft was fine though. It’s weird because it’s not diacetyl in the traditional sense. The mouthfeel is not slick and if you heat up the beer, it doesn’t get worse.

I had a can the other night and didn't get any of the buttery/diacetyl flavor, but did notice it on draft a while back. Must be a batch variation.

@checktherhyme you nailed it with one of the beers I was hinting at. I didn't want to mention Fort George because I hadn't heard others mention it. The beers were not old by any means.

Same thing happened last week with Ecliptic Phaser Hazy IPA. Again, this only occurred after I returned for a second 6-pack. Wasn't that bad, but I noticed it immediately.

The yeast strains used to produce these beers are pretty fragile, and not very tolerant of constant temperature fluctuations, like being stored in a warm warehouse, sitting on a floor display at a grocery store, being taken in and out of cold boxes, etc. Also the yeast typically has a pretty short shelf like, unlike the tried and true 1056 strain.

The off flavors you are all describing are results of those things, and that's why distributing packaged versions of these beers in large quantities is risky. People always ask us why we don't distribute FUZZ cans, the fragility of the beer is the primary reason. We distribute kegs of our "hazy" beers because we sell beer to accounts that keep the kegs cold at all times, so we know the beer will be safe.

Ecliptic Phaser in cans is delicious.

The pint I had on tap last night at Civic Taproom was bland.

Things that make you go "Hmmm."

LOL! I had a feeling you wouldn't give up all that easily in your quest to find some cans of EP.

I buy almost all of my beers in four packs and a lot of them are hazy. I drink each four pack down to a single then eventually have around 30 single cans of hazy beer and every single beer tastes different.

I'm surprised to hear that. Usually by beer number 8 or 9, unless I'm drinking completely different styles, everything tastes pretty much the same to me. By beer 19 or 20, I'm typically out cold. By beer 29 or 30, I'm usually at the hospital having my stomach pumped.

I confess you never cease to amaze me ElijahSF. You're clearly made of sterner stuff than I.

30 hazy IPAs in one setting? This guy must have the liver processing power of Andre the Giant.

Well now, let's not get too carried away. 30 cans of hazy IPA would barely be a light pre dinner appetizer for the great Andre the Giant.:sunglasses:

Whoo boy! I most certainly disagree, with a level of wholeheartedness that I cannot describe here. I almost couldn't finish a can. I almost never drain pour, but this one was headed towards the sink. I powered through though, then followed up with a real IPA. Damn, I'm stubborn.

Don't get me wrong ... I'm not fan of the majority of his posts, but that's not at all how I interpreted this post. Where did you all get the 'in one sitting' part of it? Not sure why I'm spending the time defending him, but seems only right if I'm going to call him out when appropriate as well.

Beat me to it LockeNess. Only others came up with "one sitting" ... but fun is fun

Seven tall boys of hazy IPA in one sitting? Damn, those must be some strong yeasty beer farts.

Never had that problem, sorry to hear others are suffering from it. That's a light night, usually push for double digits if I have dinner.

Exactly. I thought his post was subject to more than a single interpretation, and so took it that way.

It didn't seem entirely unreasonable. If you're saving a can from every 4 pack you consume, I would assume that would be so that you could make a side by side comparison of those remaining single cans. If you're checking for similarities and/or differences, I think it's pretty hard to do that if you don't try them all at the same time.
