It seems to me that a lot off people are starting to turn away from the hoppier IPAs and heading towards more sessionable beer styles. I get that the time of year is an indicator on which beer styles will be popular but overall is the west coast style IPA trending down?

Not over here in New England, I don't think the IPA, DIPA craze ever really settles down over here. I do admit that once the weather gets colder, I notice a switch to darker beers but still massive amounts of people on the lookout for the next big IPA.

13,086 American IPAs listed on BA.
    4,970 DIPAs listed on BA.
1,156 English IPAs listed on BA.

    I'll answer, no.

Definitely haven't seen that at all. I'd welcome that (somewhat), but I don't think that's going on anywhere I've been lately.

I don't mean the entire genre of IPAs, just the really high IBU stuff. I see more and more session IPAs on the shelves nowadays then the big DIPAs i saw over the summer.

No, though I can see why it would seem that way. Breweries seem to be getting more adventurous with styles lately.

I'd say that we're starting to see a bit more diversity in styles, especially from some of the bigger breweries (Sierra Nevada Otra Vez is one example) but as far as I'm concerned, IPAs may be more popular than they've ever been before.

IPAs as a whole, no. West Coast style, maybe a little, since NE style IPAs are all the rage now.
All the craft beer newbies will keep the IPA popularity going.

I stick with my original answer. Even with "session" IPAs becoming popular, new high IBU IPAs are still getting churned out. Beer geeks love to sear their palates.

And don't forget, DIPAs are big in ABV, not just IBU. Every beer geek wants punch and kick. :grinning:

I wish, then there could potentially be more than 1 california common in at my beer store, or more than 0 english milds.

So tired of IPA's, it would be nice to see more variety.

So according to you, I'll always be a newbie. Call me what you want, I don't think I'll ever stop liking IPAs.

I am not observing a trend away from IPAs here in Ohio. At most better beer retailers I would say 1/3 of the shelf space is dedicated to American IPAs and DIPAs and that trend has been holding strong for the last few years.

Extremely rural Ohio? Only 1 store?

It still seems like there is a ton of variety out there. Even in the IPA family, I think there is a lot of variety among the session IPAs, pales, IPAs, and DIPAs with all of the varying hop varietals. While I agree there are tons of IPAs and DIPAs out there, I am seeing a lot of wild ales on the rise. Breweries are increasingly starting to experiment with Brett and other wild yeasts. I've been seeing lots of stouts, Belgian ales of all kinds, etc. If anything, it seems breweries are branching out and experimenting more than ever before.

IPA's kinda do fade away in the Winter for me when I switch over to thing like stouts and barleywines but I will pick them up occasionally. Nugget Nectar should be in the stores soon.

I'm not sure where @JFMBearcat is from in Ohio, but I can corroborate that I've been numerous times over many years to the big retailers in Dayton and Cincinnati and I've never seen more than 1 Cal Common and I've never seen a bottled mild.

As a side note, even if I did see a bottled mild from the UK I'm not sure I would buy it. Low gravity plus shelf time don't usually equate to great beer. I'll stick to homebrewing UK styles and begging local breweries to attempt the styles.
