Are pint glasses really necessary?

I like pint glasses for nitro stouts or 16 oz cans, but they are one of the least "necessary" glass types. It's all a matter of preference, though.

I haven't tried it, so I won't knock it. But it seems silly from where I stand. To start, I don't like IPAs. And I realize that is purely subjective opinion. But to pay that much for specialty glasses seems a bit over the top. Especially so for beers I don't like. To be honest, I haven't tried many types of glass ware though.

i mean, if we want to get all technical, food, water, oxygen & maybe shelter are: "necessary". the levels of necessities or luxury above are varied opinions. i don't think it's necessarily intentional but a couple of the posts above sound like bait & folks gathering to watch another fight.

honest question to ask yourself. do you need the glasses? if so, enjoy them. if you think you do or don't need them based on what the rest of us think, feel or may say about them, then you probably should just resort to yanking tops off with your Delta dental work & knockin' em' back straight out the bottle. why not eliminate the glass worry altogether?

I have many different glasses. But a have both a full size unbranded nonic pint glass and a goose island 12oz. nonic "pint" glass. Those are used solely for things like brown ales/bitters. Low abv, low aroma, delicious but not complex styles. Anything else, goes in the respective tulip, snifter, goblet, chalice, or IPA glass.

I have several boxes of shaker pints - I generally won't use them for beer though. Water, soda, mixed drinks, sure, but I have a collection of more specialized glasses for beer.
I'm not saying I would just get rid of them or anything, or never use them for beer.
I'll sometimes use the shakers for my "daily drinker" beers - ones that aren't as special - but for anything interesting I will use the tulips, nonics, and so forth.

My total wine snifter will hold almost a full bomber.

Pint glasses remind me of the frosted beer glasses still used at too many restaurants now days. My pint glasses are boxed away and replaced by tulips and snifter glassware.

I only use shaker pint glasses for their intended purpose: mixing drinks.

My shaker pints are stored at a low level of my kitchen cabinet, but my snifters, Tekus, etc. are stored on a higher shelf to help protect them from danger (frequent usage/breakage exposure), thus I use shaker pints 99% of the time just because they are more reachable.

teenagers / pre-teen kids doing dishes = expendable pint glasses in heavy rotation unless I have an over the top something special and make a note of only me taking care of THAT particular glass. Gotta watch it though. Kids are great at gaining inertia on a slippery slope, and if I introduce more "do not wash this" opportunities, they will quickly interpret this as "don't do your chores, EVER." So ya, it's usually pints for me.

Nothing wrong with a good, sturdy pint glass every now and then. Especially for lagers and less complex stuff.
If I'm going for something more interesting I'll generally use one of the hand blown tumblers I have, because I don't have any specialised beer glasses for particular styles.
If I stumble across anything 'proper' that isn't outrageously priced then I would be inclined to pick it up. Alas, this hasn't happened yet!

I'm a big believer in the power of the pint! I'd say that the pint, along with a tulip and a snifter, are the three primary beer glasses. A pint can handle a pale, a stout, a brown, a barleywine, anything English, and most things American. Don't knock it! :stuck_out_tongue:
