Are PNW brewpubs the new "local"?

Outside Portland and Seattle, I did a quick tour today of some of the smaller newer brewpubs in the Oregon City and Clackamas area it pretty much confirmed that out here brewpubs attract all ages especially older drinkers.
    Same in Salem.
Do older 50 + p folks hang out at brewpubs elsewhere in the nation?
By the way all the breweries i visited were either $4 or $5 a pint
Got back to my local in Salem and its the same mixed crowd.
Are we sure craft beer is "hip"?

Well, up here in the hinterlands, the brewpubs and breweries tend to draw from all demographics. Only a couple of the breweries are 21+, so you see families, and folks from all angles of the public circle. And remember, folks who were attracted to "good beer" during the first microbrew boom in the 80s, are 30+ years older, and likely still love good beer.

Do you think or know if it is like this elsewhere?
It seems that its a far more young/hipster etc thing in many areas

I seem to think that it's fairly broad in general. I think the "beer bar" scene is probably more a "scenester" thing than the breweries are.

I feel like an outlier. Very few people my age share my tastes in beer and I sometimes feel like an outsider among the younger crowd even though I've met some very nice people over a beer. (you know who you are )

I'm actually surprised to hear you say that. As you know, I'm pretty much the same age as you Larry (maybe even a few years older). Most of the folks I work with are also around the same age, and we all have similar tastes in beer. OK. Not everyone shares my appreciation for things like Boneyard Notorious, Fremont Rusty Nail, or HOTD Maja or Cherry Adam, but you know what I mean. Most of them enjoy good food and drink, and have long since stopped drinking the BMC swill of the world. If they drink beer (and most of them do), they tend to drink craft. The biggest difference has to do with our tolerance level. My days of downing a few pitchers after a couple of rounds of Frisbee golf or long behind I'm afraid. A couple of glasses of Bohizafa (which I'm sipping on even as we speak), and I'm pretty much done for the day.

Anyway, the next geezer bottle share we have down here (usually happens a few times a year), I'll shoot you a beermail. You'll like my friends I think, and I know they'll like you. Especially when I tell that that you were the one that contributed the original rusty nail to the BA stout event I had at my house down in Eugene a couple years back. :-) Cheers!

I think you told me at some point, in one of the beermails you sent me many moons ago (during one of your trips to RR during younger week). :-)

My mom is 60 and my dad is 63. They're always at a brewery drinking something new and hyped.

    You guys aren't alone.

I have never felt like an outsider drinking beer with others. Wine, yes, whiskey, yes, scotch, yes. Beer I get and beer gets me. To a point, I get to control the people I share that relationship with.

Couple of things that I have figured out. The newer and hipper the place, the younger the clientele. Works when I want to meet younger people or want to be a spectator ( I would gladly pay extra for some of the stuff I have seen at Apex). If I want to hang with people my age, the dirtier or grimier the better. Dark woods, something frying in the back, proximity to bait or fuel, shady people hanging in the parking lot or out front trying to sell you a VCR, etc....

Started this relationship a long time ago and by taking care of it and respecting it, I get to continue where others had to stop or realign. It's a pretty cool hobby when others my age have moved on to wine, corvettes, breeding hunting dogs, etc...

Sounds like you're describing the Beer Authority in Lake City, one of my favorite places to just sit and have a beer.

My favorite brewpub has ages all over the place. Seems to be the norm in my neck of the woods (among brewpubs/taprooms, anyway). The only demographic missing is the "I just turned 21 - where's the Jager Bombs?" crowd, whose absence I do not lament at all.

My local haunts are Latona Pub and Toronado. They're both all over the place in terms of age. Latona has lots of people who live in the neighborhood and have been going there for 25 years, which is really cool, but also a good number of people in their 20s and 30s.

Maybe not so much on bottle release days, but I regularly see a good number of older (ie. 50+) dudes and couples at Holy Mountain.

"Face it hipsters, us geezer types have more disposable income and lots better taste." (Older NW BA types)

My Dad say stuff similar to that all the time. Oh the life of the retired Boeing machinist. They're off to Oahu and Maui for two weeks, home for a bit and then off to Nashville. I just make the list of places they should hit up. And they bring me beer. So it works.

I'm neither geezer nor hipster, but whereas I agree that you older folks tend to have "lots better taste"--and, for that matter, lots better perspective (on most things:wink:)--no abundance of today's hipsters, flush with their tech money, seems to be suffering from a shortage of disposable income. You might have to disabuse yourself of the notion that the casually clad youngster next to you at the bar is probably wanting for cash. Something very different is just as likely to be true.

As the anecdotal evidence provided on this thread suggests, the popularity of craft beer is limited to no one demographic, at least in our region. Which is wonderful for so many reasons, just one being that it should help to fuel even more growth in the industry in the years to come. But, according to my anecdotal perspective, it is especially popular with yuppies. As others have indicated, that appears to be even more true when we start talking about the newer and trendier places, and the more limited and hyped offerings. Then I think their predominance really comes to the fore.

That, however, just takes us back to the matter of your generally better perspectives. @chinochino's lovely post was a case-in-point. Would that such attitudes were even more common, but I am at least grateful that they are in such relatively high percentage here in this forum. I personally still have a lot to learn from these folks, but they--you--all taught me a lot quickly, and helped me avoid some of the growing pains...
