If you want peat flavor in your beer just put a couple of band-aids in the bottom of your pint glass.

As was mentioned above, peat is really peat smoked malt. Peat can be dried and burned as a fuel and was used as such to dry the malted barley. Peat smoked malt certainly has an interesting and very phenolic flavor and aroma profile (not for everyone, to be sure), but the smokiness and peatiness in traditional Scottish and Scotch Ales is normally primarily attributed to the yeast, fermentation conditions, and water profile. Any smoked malt, and especially peat smoked malt, should be used very judiciously.

I once heard that Rogue made a beer with Pete (apparently he fell into one of the fermenters). Legend has it, that beer was later re-branded as "Dead Guy Ale". True story, or so I've been told!

I'm currently drinking a rauchbier from a Swedish craft brewery which uses peated malt from a Swedish whisky distillery, the malt is smoked over a blend of peat and juniper twigs and it tastes very different from the beechwood smoked beers I've had in the past. Instead of the smoked meats that I get from Schlenkerla Märzen the peated whisky and tar notes (with tar probably being the most identifiable flavor, it tastes like a freshly tarred wooden boat smells) are front and center. I prefer the beechwood smokiness, but it's not bad. I'm not a fan of hard liquor so the similarity with whisky throws me off a bit, I half-expect the alcoholic/medicinal punch to hit me in the aftertaste but instead it's mellow and pleasant, with some sweet maltiness coming through.

I forget whether Old Chub has peat malt or German rauchmalt. I am pretty sure Hair of the Dog Adam has some peat malt in it.
