Are these actually two different beers?

My only guess would be this "In 2011 the recipe was altered to bump the IBU’s from 55 to 70; ABV also increased from 6.4% to 7.0%" It also looks like they are calling it a Red IPA now instead of a Red Ale.

That's what I thought, too, as the first review for the new one was in Nov. '11, but people have been reviewing the old one since then. To me it seems like when they made the changes, one person submitted the changes to the original listing, and someone else created a whole new listing, such that news reviews of each are actually reviews of the same beer (assuming, of course, that people aren't reviewing 6+ month old bottles).

There has been a change request (duplicate listing) in for months now. Only The Bros. can deal with duplicate beers, so it awaits their time to work on it.

By the way, while we are on the topic of duplicates, how come old guardian has a new entry every year?

I've wondered that too. My only guess, since there doesn't appear to be a recipe change from year to year, is that no one flags it for the mods to consider.

I don't know. Most likely at some point someone thought the recipe varied from year to year. The ABV certainly varies, but that is true for many beers which do not get a new listing each year.

greg koch has said on BA that they tweak the recipe of stone IRS every year too (not that i've ever noticed this when drinking it). i'd guess the same is true of old guardian. as you point out though, whether or not this merits a new listing seems to vary by beer for some reason.

it's a pretty... hard to decide question, really. batch consistency varies a lot among breweries, whether they change the recipe or not. i can't imagine a set rule that really works. would be stupid to lump together widely varying recipes b/c you want to be consistent, or to separate every beer into useless listings because there's tiny batch variance.

I lean towards not listing year by year if the recipe is only tweaked/changes and go for new listings, obviously, if the style changes, which happens on occasion. Please, don't ask me to give you an example...

Sixpoint Apollo is a very recent example of a beer changing recipe and style but keeping the same name. So, it got a new listing.
