Beer geeks, enthusiasts, connoisseurs. They’re all the same, more or less, but unfortunately, far too many confuse these passionate types as being “beer snobs.” Even worse, some label themselves as beer snobs.

Perhaps the phase of "beer snob" hits a lot of folks but as time goes, I have retreated further and further away from those feelings about the beer I drink and other's choices....and I have come to embrace more simple and traditional beers.

I'm too old to really care what or why other people choose to drink.

    Why should anyone, honestly?

You know you’re a beer snob if …

    • You think your palate is better than everyone else’s.
"Let them have their pumpkin peach ales."
    • You put others down for their beer choices.
"Let them have their pumpkin peach ales."
    • You criticize and dismiss beers you haven’t tried.
"Let them have their pumpkin peach ales."
    • You can’t refuse a beer you deem inferior without being snarky.
"Let them have their pumpkin peach ales."
    • You feel compelled to correct people because you think they’re wrong.
"Let them have their pumpkin peach ales."
    • You think breweries are overrated just because they’ve become popular or successful.
"Let them have their pumpkin peach ales."
    • You feel the need to defend yourself after reading this.
    "It works both ways."

I admit, I try and fight those feelings sometimes, especially the overrated breweries one.....

I am not, but I've witnessed it in action, and it's not pretty. Drink and let drink is my credo.

I think the real question is "are you a snob" because if you are the subject doesn't really matter.

I’ve got some pretty high end stuff AND Bud Light in the fridge currently, so I’m thinking no.

My palate is better than everyone else's... at least for my taste it is.

The problem is people who want to tell everyone else what they should like.

Well, I was doing good until I got towards the end of the list. I sure don't think I have a magical palate, don't know more than anyone else, and I can pass on a macro without being rude....but if restaurant wait staff offer craft beer only by the brewery name, I feel obliged to educate them to the fact that craft isn't like Bud/Miller/Coors where the brewery name tells you everything you need to know. Offering me an unspecific Boulevard, Lagunitas, Surly, etc tells me nothing about which of their many beers are on tap. I'll tell them that the brewery in question has dozens of different beers, and send them to find out, even though I know it will probably be an IPA I won't take them up on.

I guess I pass the test based on something that happened last week. My wife and I had gone to a fund raiser for someone's upcoming medical expenses and bought raffle tickets for prize baskets. We won one that had seven bottles of craft beer, none of which I would've purchased on my own, so I was thinking to myself that I needed those like a third nut. But I kept it to myself so I'm not a beer snob. And maybe there will be a hot day where something like an AAL would be called for.
