I went to Denizens Brewing in Silver Spring a couple of Saturdays ago..they had 14 different beers available. Without flights, how would I have tried them all? Tick tick tick!

I am a Flighter initially for a place that is new to me. Gives a chance to try as many offerings as I can and see which to get a pint of to really experience it. Now if there is something really rare or unique on the board I will probably go full pint on those. I just worry about getting a selection that isn't that great, then assuming they are all bad, so I give them all a chance first.

flights are good. even if I'm not driving full pours get a little much if I'm doing multiple breweries in a day.

Yes, especially if I'm at a new brewery or out of town brewery. Want to taste as many as possible. Good example was visiting Kuhnhenn today - not sure when I'll get back so wanted to get a wide variety

Don't get me started on that rant.

Sad thing is, this flight strategy has gotten more important in recent years. I've had a few places where I walked after the sampler because there wasn't one single beer I wanted to drink.

I don't know how you can review over a thousand beers in a couple years and still have a liver without doing flights.

Written up 300+ brewpubs, the flight is kind of what I do...

A lot of places don't have enough beers I want to try to fill an entire flight. Some have more than enough.

    So... it all depends.

Never at a beer bar that offers them, but occasionally I'll get them at a brewery. If there's minimal chance I will return to the brewery any time soon, or at all, I do like to try as many as I can. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised. I would not normally order a Pilsner, but if I get one in a flight and its a knockout, I'm usually happy I got the flight.

Personally I'm a big fan of places that serve beer in $3-5 half pints (8oz). If I'm not certain, I can get 2-3 of those and try them out before I make a decision for a pint or two.

I'm a former server, I know its a pain. As been said before, its their job. If its that burdensome, it should not be on the menu. That dbag who slurps up free samples of every single beer before ordering your single pint? Yeah, I agree. That's not what most people are doing here. If its a new brewery and you aren't sure about their lineup, its extremely helpful to get a feel for what they make and how they do it.

As I already mentioned, the flight is almost a must at Russian River. Everytime I've taken a friend who's never been there before, I tell them they gotta do three things: Pliny, sampler and one or more glasses of some of their awesome sours. The food ain't bad neither.

    This. Definitely prefer this approach.

That said, after the first visit, I almost never do.

I will get a flight only if their are multiple pub only beers available that interest me. Then I will have pints of the winners.

While I agree with others' points that you need a whole beer to fully experience that beer (changes with temperature and as your palate adjusts), I think a few ounces is enough to decide whether you really like the beer. If you are like me and you enjoy all styles of beer, the flight is an essential tool to help you separate the wheat from the chaff. With pints only, there would never be enough time or room in your stomach to try them all.
