They're great on a first visit to a new brewery, to peg their style (malt/hop/ABV/density-haze, etc), but after that? No. Never again. But yeah... first time? Absolutely - then you're not drinking 16 oz of something you realize you hate.

If I'm at a brewery new to me, a flight is a good place to start. Just because I know the styles & know the styles I enjoy doesn't mean I will enjoy the brewers interpretation of these styles. Try before you buy.

I love just trying all the beers at once. Way cheaper than buying a pint of each and potentially having to choke down 16 oz of swill. You often get to choose the ones you want to try if the selection is large enough as well.

Love flights, get one whenever possible (if they have several beers I've never tried before). The winning beer of the flight always then gets a full pour.

When visiting a new brewery i think its important to get a flight, if available. It gives you a good feel of what the brewery is really about, and which styles they excel in. Also gives you an idea of their overall flavor profile...

That being said, usually i fell like about half the flight i could have passed on; which is why if i go back to a brewery for a second time i will just get full pours, and just ask to take a taste of any new beers they have.

    Usually order flights when available.
Besides allowing more sampling (varieties), flights provide unusual occasions for back-to-back or intertwined tasting of different beers. Not that I want to do this with, say, a stout and a sour, but with two or three varieties of the same style this can really shed light on subtle differences.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I didn't know people had such strong opinions on this topic!

Yeah especially if it is a place I can't regularly get access too.

I will go for the flight at a new place. In my opinion, I've been around the block enough to tell with 3oz whether I will or wont like an offering of style X. I'll then get a full pour of one that I found to be the best or most interesting.

I did a 16-beer flight once at Russian River and it was great.

I never do them, though, and don't like them. The common sentiment I've seen in this thread is that we know what we like and I drink what I like.

I have to be in the right mood, but if I feel like trying new things absolutely, if I don't buy a flight, then whatever beer I purchase has to be something I know that I like, I enjoy flights because it allows me to take a risk or two and to try a full range of things without getting shitty

If it is a new place I will generally do a flight and a pint. If I have been there before, it is always a pint, or two.

    No flights for me.

1: they are never poured with any head, so good luck trying to good aroma from it
2: i need to really dive into a beer to see if I like it. At least a half pint. Flight pours are generally too small.
3: mixing around flavors from 4 or 5 different beers in a short armount of time does none of them justice. Flavors get mixed up on your palate too quickly.

The general public seems to like them so I can see why breweries and bars offer them.

Generally no, I can't appreciate them as much one after another in small doses.

Like a lot of people on here, I will order one at a new brewery as their beers can be hit or miss. Then full pint on one(s) i like. Repeat visits, full pints. Never at bars.
