I've rated a couple but for the most part, I rate on untappd. It's easy to do it in the palm of my hand at the exact moment I'm having my drink.

I review most of the time, mostly for my own records and partly to give feedback for anyone else trying the beer or the establishment who brewed it.

I rate on BA to track everything I have tried - I review some if I have the motivation and I do rate some of the worst ones trying to be creative with descriptions and humor myself.

Log book/beer log in back pocket everywhere I go. Fill one up every 2 months or so, taking notes on almost every beer I drink every day. Almost always, when I sit down in a bar or restaurant, or in a tap room, someone wants to know what I'm doing and why. Fun to discuss tasting beer and taking notes. Old school. Rate on BA when I can (thought I'd have more time since retiring end of January) but travel and wife keep me pretty busy.. Cheers!

I very rarely rate on here, and I haven't written a review as yet, as I'm not a big fan of the system, and still being pretty new to beer analysis/the craft scene (if not craft beer itself).

That said, I do rate every beer I have on Untapped (Pulley9 there too, if anyone cares), and almost always add a couple of quick comments explaining what I think about the beer. I feel it's a far more accessible and suitable way for someone with my (lack of) experience when it comes to the rating/reviewing game.

That said, I read a lot of reviews on here and I really do appreciate those who go to the effort of writing them. It's a big help!

As for why I rate/review/check in a beer, it's generally for my own records so I can keep track of what I've had so far, and can see trends of what I'm drinking when. The same reasons as most posters here, I suppose!

I rate to keep track of what I drink, to expand my knowledge of beer, to develop my abilities to sense different characteristics in beer, and its fun. If I am ordering stuff online and am unfamiliar with a brewery's products I will use the ratings to help make selections. The ratings are also useful to see if other people are sensing things in a beer that I am not and vice versa.

I've rated a few but practically all my beer drinking is done in the pub.Two factors inhibit me ; the first is that the quality and characteristics of cask beer depend to a great extent on the cellarmanship and care taken. It also hinges on the length of time the cask has been tapped for; cask ale improves with time , plateaus and then drops off.
I rarely review bottled versions of cask beers as they simply don't do justice to the brewer.
The other factor is simply that I've better things to do in a pub.Pubs aren't just about the beer after all.I can't sit around writing notes!

I-rate. I don't tend to write a review, although I've been doing that occasionally too. I'm just not great with articulating the way a lot of people are on here.

Used to do longer reviews until I realized nobody really cares what I think. Now I just put a couple short notes...mostly to remind me what I thought of it in case I forget and am thinking about getting something again in the future.

I stopped years ago. The more I drank the same beers over time and realized how subjective my experience was each time (drinking alone or with food? what food? first beer or right after another beer? am i congested today? what mood am i in? what's the weather like? etc. etc.), the more I came to believe it's unfair to rate very good beers based on a one time experience.

Logbook for sure. But also to see if at any other time I have that beer, do any of my ratings change for that beer from past experiences.

I review a lot of what I try. If it's a memorable beer (for better or worse) that I may want to revisit, I'll give a full review. If a beer is unmemorable, I'll tick a quick rating if I remember.

I do a full review when I have time and if I am busy with my 3 kids and wife I will toss in a quick review. I enjoy reviewing it does get a little repetitive, using the same words often.

I rate to keep track of what I've tried. Built my own inventory system for reviews and tracking nuances between bottles / releases (e.g. different releases of Big Bad Baptist, etc).

I consider myself more of a reviewer than a rater.

While I definitely enjoy assigning scores to the various categories and would find it a much less enjoyable activity if it were otherwise, I also enjoy describing the beer and my experiences while drinking it. I guess I do this because it helps me remember things and I find it generally fun.

I tend to take notes on things because I rarely drink in front of a computer. Might take me a long time, then I get an afternoon to myself and I hack out 10 in a row.

I rate to log my beers and to share my thought of that particular beer. I don't review unless something really sticks out to me about that beer or if the selection is a variation of the beer (i.e. brewery ABC's IPA that is citra one year and cascade the next).

It is interesting, to me, to see how my tastes change over time as well if I rate a beer a second time. Onward to 1200!

I rate beers to earn BA points so that some day I will become an Advocate! After that a champion! And one day a Poobah!!! Then my life will be complete.

For the last couple of years, I have used BA while in bottle shops to help pick and choose what I wanted to try. More helpful than the rating, in almost every case, were the comments. It was nice to get an idea of a beers qualities, how it is different than other beers of the same or similar style, and what to look forward too after pouring the bottle. I rate in an effort to provide others the information I think they should know in order to make an informed choice about a particular brew. For those of you who don't rate . . . why not?
