Well, not all that unusual, since that can often be the effect certain labels have on many. If label design wasn't sometimes a turn off, nobody would have to do research on things like the best colors to use or not use, choice of wording to use or not use, placement of different bits of information on the label, or the changing demographics in the potential customer base.

If I am seeking something in particular to try after I've read about it, the label does not matter. If I'm just browsing and musing, it definitely matters. I actually see it as part of the overall experience - the label, the cap, and the name of the beer. I am such a sucker for super good (a.k.a. as bad as possible) puns.

I'm just as often deterred by the label as I am attracted by it. I've been interested in trying more Dark Horse, and I have picked up a Scotty Karate, but overall their aesthetic and the aggressive tone of their website is really off putting to me. On the opposite end, I'd love to try more Anchor Brewing stuff partly because of their look and tone.

Marketing absolutely makes a difference in what we buy or don't buy. Millions upon millions of dollars are spent on marketing in all businesses for a reason. Once a bottle catches our eye, be it for the name or the label design, we are more likely to purchase it. Of course I am not going to buy a style of beer or a brewery that I don't like just for the label or name. However, all other factors being equal I am going to try the new beer that has the appealing design or name. The first time I bought Keegan Ales Mother's Milk was for the name, I buy it now because I like the beer. We are all influenced by marketing more than we think and would like to admit.

I don't buy beer with offensive labels either. It can be frustrating when it happens to be a beer that I would otherwise enjoy. If I especially like a beer label, I'll often leave it on the counter for a few days as decoration.

First off let me thanks to all you good people here on BeerAdvocate! Believe me or not when I tell you that labels don't sell beer to me. I've beer making beer and tea and cocktail cans for 43 years this September. 8, 10, 12, 16, and 24 oz. I've pretty much seen it all. Now back to my first sentence. You good folk on this site have made my beer experience much more enjoyable! If you liked it, I certainly went looking for it! If you didn't like it, I still went looking for it! I'm pretty much known by family and friends to eat anything that doesn't eat me first and to try any drink! So thanks again to all for expanding my palate and my knowledge of beer!:grinning:

    Cheers to All

Well, I mean. Yeah. If a brewery is willing to put that much effort into great label art it really shows they care about all aspects of their beer and aren't overlooking anything.

I don't buy beer specifically because of the label, but a good label can catch my eye in a bottle shop. I tend to like cleaner design. Something that's busy isn't going to catch my eye. I usually look for specific brands too.

Also, never Brown Note. In fact, Brown Note has turned me off to any AtG beer.

It's definitely something I enjoy, I think Jester King has really nice labels and it's interesting to see new work come out

As a long-time creative director/designer I have held on to a quote I first heard many years ago: "Good design connotes quality" which, in my mind, pretty much rings true in most cases, although I wouldn't say no to a bottle of Hoppin' Frog.

Precisely the kind of beer I'd avoid, name and label just too clever by half!

If a label says "beer" on it, yes I am influenced by it - to buy it.

How can you make that huge jump in logic? I get how quality in one area MIGHT mean quality in another area, but the direct relationship that you're claiming really isn't the case.

I'd say that a bad label doesn't dissuade me if I've heard good things.

But a nice label could catch my eye when looking for something new.

I like the ones that say "IPA" or "Imperial" in big letters on them. Makes skipping over them much faster.
