Being IPA Day, I'm celebrating by enjoying a good IPA. When I say "enjoying", I mean it... since this will be my last beer for a year.
As a "Hop-Head" and craft brew aficionado, why the self-imposed challenge? Mainly, for my daughter Bella and her genetic disorder 1p36 Deletion Syndrome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1p36_deletion_syndrome

Since 8/1 is the start of the 1p36 DSA Annual Conference and also happens to be IPA Day, it seems like a fitting day to bid farewell to beer for a year - until IPA Day 2014 where a celebration will certainly ensue.

If a BA can sacrifice beer for a year, it must be a worthy cause. I hope this effort sparks interest in some people to look up 1p36 Deletion Syndrome, learn something about it and maybe even support awareness/fundraising.

Apologies to Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, Deschutes Brewery, The Factory, Lazy Acres, Whole Foods Long Beach and Total Wine... I won't be in as often - at least for beer (unless it's age worthy). Hopefully some locals out there pick up my slack... er benefit from my not swiping bottles. ; )

    Cheers

    Jon

Kudos to you and best wishes for your daughter. I am in my 7th month of self imposed not purchasing any beer during my wife's pregnancy. I still drink it though.

Well, my brew hiatus is just a personal thing but I wanted to give you West Coast (specifically S CA) residents a heads up on a more public venture to raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit organization.

I'm hosting the first of a number of dining fundraisers on Dec 17th in Long Beach, CA. Go to the event page for more info, but to at least entice you a little: aside from showing support for a good cause, the restaurant/lounge tends to offer quality craft beer and I'm working on different raffle packages to offer - one of which should be an appealing "beer basket".

I'll share details on the raffle package options later as they are established.

Please, do consider attending if you're close enough to Long Beach; I'd really appreciate it.

    Thank you,

    Jon
