I'm having it for the first time tonight, as I don't get much access to American craft, and I always thought it was an IPA. It didn't seem that much like one when took my first sip and I noticed BA labelled it as a Strong Ale. Nonetheless I like the beer but I always thought it was an IPA. huh.

    ALL beers are IPAs.
    Aren't they?

It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth.

It's the malts. I really like most Stone offerings, but this one does nothing for me (it's my palate, I'm sure.)

I guess I am not worthy. devil horns. marketing. awesome.

Nope, not an IPA. But now you know you like "American Strong Ales." Which have always been somewhere between an IPA and a Barley Wine for me. A style well worth exploring. Cheers.

Yeah and it tastes more like a Barley Wine than an IPA to me.

If at all possible, try to find some Great Lakes Nosferatu. Out seasonally right now but not for long, this one fits the strong ale category no matter what they changed the label to say.

I was not opposed to American strong ales previously and I have had some examples I thoroughly enjoyed. Arrogant Bastard was by far the best I've had to though. I was just expecting an IPA.

I just wish I could have had it fresher as I passed the "enjoy by" date by 3 months. I can assume the hop aroma and overall hop presence would have been much nicer when fresher.

This beer does not rely on fragile hop aroma and flavor for it's strength. Not an IPA. Judge it by appropriate merits.

If you look through the list of American Strong Ales, this would be an outlier for hoppiness. If the whole point is astounding excess of bitter hops, then why wouldn't it be an IPA?

Stone still did feel the need to include a "Enjoy by" so I'm assuming it was best to drink the beer by then and I didn't. I'm keying in that my version of the beer didn't taste how Stone intended which is disappointing but it still tasted great.

Stone is one of the leading innovators of American IPAs, but they can also play a tune in some other keys like Barleywine, Imperial Stout and "strong ale"

I wouldn't call it "pale", so no, I guess it's not technically an IPA. American Strong Ale is such a vague style though, perhaps more so than IPA; would you put AB and Older Viscosity in the same category? I rest my case.
