Not entirely sure...but maybe they got their hands on some ultra-fresh bottles when it placed 2nd. Also I suspect (and my own anecdotal experience confirms) that Oettinger has improved over the past few years as they have expanded production and taken over previous brewers' facilities. The stuff coming out of the Braunschweig plant last time I was there was surprisingly good (also being super fresh). Note as well just how poorly the "craft" pilsners performed, with one scoring the German equivalent of a solid C and the other a low D. Yet we are supposed to believe that industrial beer is all shit and "craft" is emerging to show everyone how it's done.

One thing that was discussed by the author, and then in the comments, was the diacetyl in some of the Pils. I am not so sensitive to diacetyl, but get a trace in PU at times, but don't object to it. A real butter bomb is not to my liking.

I have had unfiltered and unpasteurized PU, and it is in my top 5 beers ever. It may be the best.

Tried a glass of Wussie last night and I loved it. It's refreshing, but really full of flavor. There were points where it felt like I could have been drinking a pale ale or IPL, but it remained pretty pilsner-y to me overall, and you can tell that's the inspiration. Hops felt predominately old world to me, but I did get a tinge of something more citrusy/tropical in there... I'd be curious to know the hop bill.

Not sure if I prefer it to Prima Pils or Pivo Pils though. Both of them I think are a bit more crisp and clean if thats what you're looking for. But Wussie is trailing not far behind. I'm definitely glad I got the 6-pack, and I'll probably get it again. The 16oz cans are an awesome bonus.

It's essentially the ventriloquist dummy scenario. No offense intended Mr. Bastard "Minion", some of my best friends are ventriloquist dummies.

The irony behind that is... My brother tried to order it at a local shop... Now, both my bro and the guy working the store are not big beer heads. Casual drinkers who will never be on this forum. Anyway, my bro shows him a pic of the can and the guys says... "Oh its by Stone!" My bro was like "No, can said brewed by Arrogant Brewing" Worker says.."You sure? That's the Stone Gargoyle"

That's what made me ask in the first place! But whatever, call/brand however you want... It's fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. That's what matters to me!

Summer of Pilsners – Who You Callin’ Wussie!?!

In the New Beer Sunday thread I have been discussing new (new for me) Pilsners. Due to scheduling difficulties I will be posting my New Beer Sunday thread today in this thread.

Today’s beer is a new Pilsner in many ways!! It is new in that I have never drank it before but it is also new in that it has just recently been released. My can of Arrogant Who You Callin’ Wussy Pilsner was canned on 06/27/16 and has an enjoy by date of 10/25/16. About a month old which is very fresh IMO.

So what does Arrogant (Stone) Brewing have to say about this beer. Well, let’s visit the website:

    “Who You Callin' Wussie

It's Time a Pilsner Got Arrogant

For far too long the tyrannical industrialized beer overlords have disgraced and cheapened the noble heritage of the pilsner with their relentless multi-generational downward drive to commercialized homogenization. Over decades, this once vaulted style has been slowly and methodically gutted, bringing forth a soulless and anemic result, all the while spending billions in advertising to convince the unwitting public that their fizzy yellow end result was beer. Well, I will not have it. We are striking back for true craft by stealing the pilsner back from their evil clutches, and restoring it to its almighty glory. They do it cheaply. We do it right. Choose vapidity, or choose righteousness...but whatever you do, choose wisely.”

Well, that does indeed sound like this beer has the same culture of Arrogant Bastard Ale.

To paraphrase an old saying, the proof is in the beer so let’s drink!!

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

Straw/golden colored with a big long lasting white head.

    Aroma:

A moderate aroma: there is some bready malt here but only a tiny hint of hop aroma.

    Taste:

The taste follows the nose as regards the malt backbone with a nice bready malt flavor. The hops were barely perceptible on the nose but they are very noticeable flavor-wise. The predominant flavor I am picking up is spicy (reminiscent of white pepper for my palate). There is a very firm bitterness to this beer.

    Mouthfeel:

Moderate carbonation with a moderate body accompanied with a dry finish.

    Overall:

This is indeed a substantial Pilsner as per the brewery’s intentions. It is a well-made Pilsner. The substantial spicy (white pepper) flavor is not particularly appealing for my personal palate but I have zero qualms recommending this beer to others who would enjoy a spicy Pilsner. As a point of example my wife is a fan of this beer.

Cheers to Arrogant (Stone) Brewery for crafting a solid Pilsner!!

Cheers Jack! and thank you for the wonderful review. You know my first thought was that you could have written this paragraph.

See you all on Sunday =)

If only pumped-up hops was really the answer to that. I sure wish today's brewers would recognize good malt and decoction mashing to bring Pilsner (and Helles, and Oktoberfest...) back to that "almighty glory."

I finally got my hands on some, and initial impressions are that I really really love it! More detailed report to come, because I am itching to see if it stands up to repeated glasses, but I can only do one on a Tuesday . I also drank this one pretty cold- straight from the regular fridge- which may be the way to go.

Just had one. Struggled at first to think of what it reminded me of. Pale bock? Too dry and peppery. American-hopped pilsner? Little too clean and not fruity or piney/resiny in that American hopped way. Then it came to me. It tastes like a Danish strong beer. Think Carlsberg or, more specifically, FAXE [if youve ever had it]. Even can looks similar to beers in that ''style.'' As such, I quite like it.

p.s. I believe Greg smashed some cans of FAXE with his forklift rock

I'll have to try it some day, then.

It's definitely clean and bitter, with some clear Pilsner malt flavor shining through. The hops seem to be spicy and resiny, but no pine. I was sort of reminded of the old old Dinkel Acker with a bit of the feel of Ruination 1, although not as severe. Those were beers I really enjoyed, so I guess it's why I really liked this one.

The thing that interests me now is if that resiny quality builds to overbearing levels after a few or not.

    Thanks for the impressions!
