Bear Waters Brewing, Canton - heavy damage, announced cleanup effort in progress. Being right on the Pigeon River, this is their second rodeo.
Glad to see that a lot of places made it. But man, those hit hardest truly got rocked. Very sad. I hope they are able to recover. Stay safe out there everyone.
Happy to post that Tugua in Fairview is Ok'ish. Lost barrel house, have two houses that washed onto their property but only a foot of water in tasting room. Cleanup already underway.
Quick notes because we both seem to be on opposite sides of the river. I had a separate list going on RB. Good to combine notes since no one else lives out here it seems. Still not allowed to drive near Curses. Forestry Camp got some building damage but is recoverable. French Broad was under 10+ of water & is digging out of literal mud now. No idea how bad. Assume the worst. Hi-Wire Biltmore had water to the roof. Hi-Wire RAD was made of shipping containers & lots of it washed away. Hillman Asheville was buried in mud. All the outside on the road is pure mud. No exact notes. River Arts has a go fund me. They got hit hard. Turgua had minimal damage last I heard. There's a cidery right by there that had no issues. Whistle Hop had damage because of their hillside location but no major infrastructure was damaged. Lots of Madison & Marshal locations are screwed but it's outside my scope. Whaley Farms posted & got hit hard. They are literally right next to Hillman. Fonta Flora is Fine. Rye Knot had significant structural damage Sideways is completely fine 12 Bones RAD is really bad
Hi-Wire Biltmore is OK, water did not get into the building, however they are closed and the parking lot is a landfill of all the stuff washing down the river. Don't know where the food truck is, if someone thought it prudent to move it, or the river did. https://hiwirebrewing.com/#prev Riverside Rhapsody has cold beer in cans.
Leveller Brewing Co.Weaverville - Opened today, closing at 7PM due to 7:30 curfew. Bear Waters Brewing - Maggie Valley - open with normal hours Frog Level Brewing - Waynesville, open and has live music tonight. Mica Town Brewing - Marion, opened today - cash only due to internet Mica Town Brewing - Nebo - closed And my neighborhood got power restored this afternoon, after 8.5 days. So things are getting better... slowly
Lots of Free food out today. Check French Broad's Instagram daily for a compilation. Bears BBQ near Wicked Weed is my winner. Super lucky if Hi-Wire says they're fine. The water must have leveled or receded quickly right at the tasting room door. Definitely have a pic on my wife's phone. The hotel & Goodwill behind them was deep. The road gets steep the next block where Appalachian Vinter is. The metal junkyard of course flooded & spilled out. Media is using it as a dramatic front page pic. Power back. No water for weeks I heard. Sadly lots of scary misinformation on ticktock/instagram by provokers & bots.
Brevard & any breweries near there are obviously also fine. Oscar Blues has a big freebie setup for food & water. Sideways is perfect & open. Haven't driven any further.
Things in Mills River are much better compared to Asheville. Saw Facebook posts that AMB and Burning Blush (with $4 beers) are open today. Sierra Nevada to my knowledge is still closed given a lot of their employees live in Asheville.
French Broad, and others, which I can't recall at the moment, are posting not about their problems, but giving out information on where to find resources people need to recover, or giving out resources like potable water from their tanks. Says a lot about the craft beer community.
Outing in a quest for a working ATM, a brewery stop occurred. Eluvium Brewing, Weaverville was open and busy. They had the porch filled with items people need, diapers, food, dog food, snacks, like a tiny general store. More items were brought in to add to the pile that I was people take. Some came and got items they need and left without getting a beer. Beer was cold and good, and their little sandwich shop was giving away food to eat. Sloppy Joe's when we got there, ham and cheese sandwiches when they ran out of Sloppy Joe's.
Turgua Brewing in Fairview is offering its space to the Army National Guard, where troops are offering assistance to ongoing recovery work and offering relief to the community.
Of the 50 or so breweries in the Asheville area, only 12 or 13 appear to be open, often on a limited basis, in addition to closing early because of the curfew. Many simply are not opening due to the water outage, which is expected to continue for weeks yet. Some are not open as a brewery, but have offered their resources, and space as for storage and distribution of relief supplies. These include Lookout, Highlands, Dssolvr, and many others. 7 have received major damage up to totally destroyed. About 4 received less severe, but major cleanup will be required. One brewery that I incorrectly assumed would take a major hit, didn't and is actually open, serving beer and handing out relief supplies. That is River Arts District Brewing, which sustained major flooding damage within the last year or so from a localized downpour
Da Boss and i spent a week in August 2021 at Rumbling Bald resort which is the northern tip of Lake Lure, very nice area. Of course, we hit Hickory Nut Gorge Brewery the first night we were there, such a cool outdoor area overlooking the Broad River. There were 4 levels where one could choose to sit and gaze at the river while hanging out. Hard to believe that much water came thru there but gravity is a bitch. Tom
Sierra Nevada, Mills River is open 11 to 4PM, with half off food for locals. Sweeten Creek Brewing, reopened.
https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subs...eda48&m=01JA5Y0EB128Z1R46YS3VA0M4P&r=3c7V9nUu The breweries that can, and even some that were devastated, are stepping up. Every brewery we that is open, and we have visited, is giving out water, diapers, food staples, and free hot food. Water is starting to return, though it is some nasty stuff, but after weeks of no water, it is nice to flush without a bucket being involved. Got ours back this morning, after 18 days without.
Glad for you Miles, was wondering if you got it back after reading the ACT this morning! I'm on the Mills River plant so we are okay, just boiling drinking water. Hopefully West Asheville is brought online soon; The City of Asheville was working on a leak near my house on NC-191 just above Avery's Creek Road. Looking forward to not having to boil! Cheers! Tom
