My pops lives in Asheville and makes the trip up to Richmond often. He likes to bring me local brews, but really just goes by what the dude at the shop tells him. Any suggestions of stuff that is local there, that I can't get here, I should tell him to bring me?
French Broad Rye Hopper. Best hoppy beer in the state. Asheville Brewing's Porter is supposedly really good, I just havent had it yet.
Rye Hopper is a damn good beer, probably the best year around hoppy beer in Asheville (I may prefer Wedge's IPA,) but there are better in the state. OHB's Death by Hops and NoDa's Hop, Drop, 'n Roll being two of them.
I agree that Hop Drop is a great IPA, and Death by Hops is too inconsistent to be thrown in as the best. Rye Hopper is just so consistently great. But he cant go wrong with any of those! Cheers
Green Man releases limited bottles from time-to-time. I got a bottle of their Schadenfreude Berliner when I was down there in December and it was absolutely fantastic.
Good suggestions. On his last visit he brought me Death by Hops, which I thought was pretty good, but not great. I also have Pisagh Pale Ale, French Broad IPA and Shivah IPA Asheville Brewing Co. Haven't tried the last three
I was just about to say I tried an IPA from Wicked Weed and it was awesome. Also Bottle Rev in Raleigh has their Saison on tap. Also awesome.
I just recieved a couple growlers of Freak from Wicked Weed. Fantastic shit, but each of the 32oz jugs were just over $12. Pretty damn pricey. Again, great beer but sky-high prices. What shop is your old man going to?
French Broad Wee Heavier and French Broad Rye are both very good, very reasonably priced, and easy to find. Local Ingles Markets sell growlers, so that opens the possibility of getting some rather rare beers from Green Man, Pisgah, and ??.
Found a couple bottles of Pisgah Vortex II Imperial Stout at Hops and Vines last weekend that are quite tasty. Also, Pisgah Valdez Coffee Stout may still be around in bottles, found those at the Chop Shop butcher on Charlotte St. (of all places) a few weeks back. Lastly, I'm not sure if they bottle it, but their Chocolate Stout is also really high quality. Yeah, I like Pisgah...
French Broad is very good, a good batch of Death By Hops tastes like a prototypical Cali IPA, a ton of fruit. I like Wedge a lot too, looks like Wicked Weed is a needed stop my next time in town.
