So a family outing is planned for the western NC mountains within driving distance of Asheville. My brother-in-law and I are big beer geeks and some other family members also enjoy good beer. We'll probably only have part of the day Saturday to visit Asheville, look around at all the glass stuff (what's up with that? Maybe someone can explain the plethora of glass, but I digress..)

I checked the directory and there are so many places that look good. I'm at a loss as to which one to choose.

I'm figuring we'll eat lunch at a bar or brewpub and hit a bottle shop, tourist around the downtown and then probably leave late afternoon. Given the limited amount of time, and that it will be a family group, what would be our best one or two options for good food & beer? We'll be visiting in mid-fall, so I'm hoping the weather will be nice enough to sit outside, but if we have to sit inside, I'm not a big fan of loud beer bars or big crowds.

Wicked Weed. Great food/great beer. Was perfect on a recent trip with a "mixed" (some drinkers, some not) group. Everyone left happy.

Wicked weed has great food and their beer is fantastic. Appalachian Vintner and brusin ales are 2 bottle shops that are very close by. Brusin ales is within walking distance

Wicked Weed has to be your top choice. Great beer, good food, outside seating. The only downside is that everyone and their brother also thinks its a good brewery. If you're talking about visiting/eating during the week or at a non-traditional eating time on the weekend, you'll probably be fine. It gets mobbed in the evenings though, especially during the weekend. Don't remember lunch being particularly crazy on the weekends.

Other than that, there are plenty of other Asheville threads. Bruisin' Ales and Appalachian Vintner are the bottle shops in town. Bruisin' is closer, Appalachian is (physically) larger (but Bruisin' packs a lot of beer into a small space). Other good breweries right near WW are Burial, Greenman, and Asheville (which would be a backup to WW for food).

But if its ONE place you're hitting, its gotta be WW...

WW as everyone suggests. Other family options downtown include the LAB and Barleys. Barleys is a great restaurant with a large selection of craft brews and good food. Pool tables upstairs.

Wicked Weed, Green Man and Burial are all within 1,500 steps of one another. Have fun.

More like 1621. 572 of them are uphill.

WW would be my only stop with family, eat upstairs or sans the family hit downstairs... IF it is off hours (think you said weekend) and not to busy, they may consent to do a flight (Downstairs), but usually they don't on the weekends. Never hurts to ask.

You may be right. It takes even longer when you're carrying a drunk friend, too.

Wicked weed for sure. Was there last weekend and it lives up to everything I've heard. Burial and Green man were good, as was Twin Leaf.

Wicked Weed if you don't mind a crowd, but any other brewery any other day will have a lot more room.

went to Asheville a few months ago for the first time...first stop was Wicked Weed, and honestly it was so good, that we went a second time before we left. My favorite Asheville brewery by far. Also recommend Wedge, which is a little hole in the wall near in the art district. They had a lot of less popular styles, all executed well.

Wicked Weed first for beers and food. It won't be that crowded during the day, it's a pretty big place and they have outdoor seating both upstairs and downstairs.

    Then go to Burial.

Appalachian Vintner is the better bottle shop, but Bruisin' is downtown. However, AV is like a 5 minute drive from Wicked Weed and Burial.

we went to Wicked Weed for lunch during the week and they allowed tasting samplers. Which is needed with all the beers they have. I hear they don't allow them on the weekends. So keep that in mind.

If you can put lunch off until after 2, Wicked Weed might not be so crowded. Maybe Saturday is crazy all day, so you may just have to take your chances. I'll tell you that it's worth the visit and the food is very good. Have fun.

Just begin with Thirsty Monk off of Patton and then you can walk in virtually any direction and find good beer. Whether you are in a good bar that serves beer or a brewpub, the options are numerous. I personally like the Asheville Brewing location off of Coxe Ave. Just a stroll down the hill from Thirsty Monk, they make great beers and have wonderful pizza.

Thirsty Monk does have good food. I generally find their taplists to be a bit underwhelming though, both upstairs and down.
