I am heading through Asheville next week for one day, either Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll probably be there from mid-morning until evening. Everyone I know who has been there absolutely loves it, but they all commented on how crowded most of the breweries and bars were. Granted, most of them went on weekends or holidays. What can I expect as far as crowds mid-week?

Since I have such limited time, I would like to get to as many of the breweries as possible, and not spend much time waiting for seats, drinks and food etc.

Also, I know a few of the breweries have food, but what are people's favorite restaurants in town if they really only had time for lunch and dinner?

Crowds shouldn't be bad. Go to Wicked Weed and you'll have another 5 places within walking distance! Also...EAT at Wicked Weed...trust me:slight_smile:

    Wicked Weed
    Burial
    Green Man
    Twin Leaf
    Wicked Weed Funkatorium

And I'm sure people will add to that list. Cheers!

Asheville Brewing Company has awesome pizza. And I second the above; if you go to Wicked Weed, you will have a bunch within walking distance. I recommend Catawba. Really enjoyed the beers there.

And it's out of the way, and also not "local", but the new Sierra Nevada brewery south of there is a marvel to behold. Worth the trip IMO.

Also, a couple of nice bottle shops on the same street as WW, Bruisin' Ales and Ashville Wine Market

I passed through a few weeks ago but only had about an hour or so, so I started off at Appalachian Vinter and made my way up to Burial and Wicked Weed. Found HD&R (amongst a few other treats) at the bottle shop, grabbed a few howlers at the breweries and made my way out. My first "drive by beering" in a while but with SO many breweries in close proximity, Asheville seems like the kind of place where you can accomplish a mad amount of tasting in a pretty short amount of time.

Nothing too add here that other posters haven't already covered. Though I will say this, you are going to have an amazing time. Great town, great brews, great food. Yessir, I'm jealous for sure. Have fun, my man!

Awesome everyone. I can't wait. I'm sure there will be diverging opinions, but how important is a trip to the SN brewery?

Will be visiting Asheville from Michigan in 2 weeks -- perfect timing for this thread.

Go to Sierra Nevada... We had a few hours in Asheville and spent the entire time at SN... The food, beer, facility were all just insane.

We are going back in fall and hope to hit up a few other local places though... And stop back at SN for sure.

Sierra Nevada is not a good representation of Asheville breweries...go to Wicked Weed and Burial and anything else is just gravy on top

I agree with this. With such limited time, why spend it all getting Sierra Nevada beers (that you can get anywhere)? Spend the time by Wicked Weed and hit all the other spots. Definitely the most efficient plan.

If you are going to WW Funkatorium and Burial be sure to stop by Tasty Beverage on the walk between the two. They had a great bottle and tap selection when we were in town last week. I also found their prices to be cheaper than App Vinter and Bruisin.

Funny story, the first time I went to Asheville, I planned on hitting up a bunch of breweries in that area. Made the "mistake" of going to Wicked Weed first. I never left.

I shit you not. I was there for over 6 hours haha

You guys should take a gander over in the South-Atlantic subforum. These exact questions are asked (and surprisingly re-answered every time, as if Ashvillans never get tired of repeating themselves) on almost a weekly basis.

I will say do not be swayed into thinking that Wicked Weed is the end-all be-all of an AVL experience. More than 20 breweries in the WNC area and about 13 of them in AVL city limits.
    Look around.

Was that before or after the Funkatorium opened? Because that makes it even more difficult...

@treznor - that time was actually all spent at their restaurant location

Im going to piggy back this thread a little. Im flying into Asheville and heading too Lake Lure. Im not planning any breweries yet. I would like to know about any good bottle shops near downtown. We are going to get BBQ before heading to the lake and I would love to find some HDR, among others.
