Thanks to everyone for the advice! Looking more for breweries than anythign else, but I might be able to fool the folks into going to a "nice restaurant" with my hidden beer agenda.

Yeah, Highland's beers are sort of middle-road BUT I love going to the brewery. For one thing, it's so pretty up there. But also, with the little area for kids and the live music and stuff, it's the most welcoming brewery I've been to when I have my family in tow (which, hey, when I'm on family vacations, sometmes I take my family.) I really appreciated a brewery that created an atmosphere that said "Hey, you're not a leper for bringing young people here. Just don't give 'em beer, but we'll throw these cool toys and stuff around for them to enjoy."

Only managed to visit Wicked Weed so far on this trip; their beers are great! Super noisy and crowded with almost a frat house vibe, though. And of course the 40-something new mothers bringing their tiny infants. To a bar.

Still, best Asheville beer in two trips.

Barleys and build your slices of pizza is always must for us, add 12 bones to the list and a nice Shiva ipa.

I'm enjoying this post. We just got back from the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area after a week and our next 'Mountains' trip will be to Asheville, NC. Smoky Mountain Brewery was nothing spectacular, but still decent from the source. Looking forward to the nature, seclusion, and of course the beer on our next journey. Cheers!

12 Bones is closed for the holidays for our entire visit. Next time!

Seems like Collard greens are an Asheville staple and the ones at 12 Bones are worth driving to in and by themselves.

Going to the Moog factory tomorrow. Will have to hit at least one more place on that trip. Sadly, I am the only one in our group that cares about beer. If I were in charge, there would be lots more beer-centic activities.

Went to Salsa's for lunch; got there just barely ahead of the lunch rush. Got one of the last tables. Had a Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout and an Asheville Shiva IPA. Need to find something to do until the breweries open at four.

Salsa is good, IMO massive portions, especially for lunch.

I hit Wedge on the 30th; when they opened at 4:00 pm, there were 25 people lined up to get in! I loved the Arts District and browsed some galleries before that. Appreciate the aesthetic of the decor and the cool location. The employees were super friendly and very cool.

Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy the beers as I had hoped I would. Nothing was flat-out bad, but nothing impressed me, either. Glad I went, nonetheless.

So, this trip was just Wicked Weed and Wedge. I tried to go to Thirsty Monk in Gerber Village later that day, but they were closed. Oh, well...

Wicked Weed was definitely the highlight of this trip; I was just there last year and this brewery didn't even exist yet! They've done very well for themselves in their first year.

Next time, I'm going out to Pisgah for sure!

I found wedge to be the only brewery in asheville, and my pops and I hit EVERY ONE OF THEM in 3 days, to not offer anything that great. Tons of people there but the brews were very mediocre.

I will have 3 hours (roughly) next Saturday afternoon to organize a walking brewery mini tour- Wicked Weed and Burial are very close to each other, right? Is there a 3rd one?

Also- any sneaky place that has really good food and beer that I could suggest for Saturday night dinner?

I will be in Asheville next weekend with 9 girls on a bachelorette party, and it's up to me to plan the beer portion

Oh- any nightlife recommendations? Whenever I have been to Asheville, drinking at Thirsty Monk has been perfect for me, but I think some of the women might be looking for something a little more upbeat. Aka live music, etc.

Wicked weed will be your one stop shop for great beer, food and party. I'm sure there will be some fine live music options arou d town as well. Mountainx.com/clubland

Asheville Brewing Company, Hi-Wire & Green Man are within walking distance.

Jack of the Wood is close, too (where Green Man got started). They usually have live music, folk & Irish mainly, and lots of dancing.

I visited Seven Sows last time I was in Asheville for a nice dinner which is very close to Wicked Weed and Burial - very nice food and nice cocktails as well (in case the rest of the girls are ready for a break from beer). They did not have an amazingly large beer selection but what they had was pretty good.
