White Labs, the big international yeast-making facility that is building on the edge of downtown Asheville, will include a brewery, a large tasting room and a small kitchen, owner and founder Chris White said Friday afternoon.

The site, which will make yeast for beer and other beverages, will serve 30-35 of its own beers, White said. The brewery will also be used in the yeast cultivating process. The kitchen will serve "some unique fermented foods and things made with our yeast," he said. He expects to be producing yeast in Asheville by November, with the public facility open in March to summer of 2017.

White Labs will employ a local staff of 65, most of which will be hired locally. He expects to bring on more employees at a hiring event coming up this fall. The company also operates from its original location in San Diego. The investment on the Asheville project is just under $10 million, he said.
