    I have too many.

When I moved, I couldn't believe how many closets had stashed cases of older stuff, and it was getting to the point where I had trouble finishing fresh stuff in a reasonable period of time.

So no more cellaring for me, at all. I'm treating beer like bread & coffee beans - buying smaller quantities, and more trips to buy more.

I have 4 beers in my cellar right now. 2 Siberian Night and 2 BCS. I tried saving things like CBS, Cantillon Classic, 3F Oude Gueuze, and others. I failed. I thought it was bad when I had like 20 bottles because I was running out of room in my 1 bedroom apartment.

I think if your passionate about collecting and cellaring beer than perhaps you can't have too much. Maybe too much means you haven't kept good inventory, you don't have adequate space to properly store the beer, and you are cellaring something past it's prime, then it could be said you have too much.

Thanks for the feedback.... Inventory is always in check - per the spreadsheet method. Actually, I also keep track of trades - whom with and what went where...Everything is kept in my basement, 2 closets built around subpump & water pipes that stay relatively cool - 50s/60s year round.. I tend to to do the Noah's Arc option - buying two...One to drink and one to cellar... but often, the drinking que seems to get backed up.... Summer time will present ample opportunity for samplings so I'll have to start planning in advance...

    cheers-

That's not far off the mark. The way my wife rolls her Rs when she's wound up is half pussycat half lioness. And the 'Drink your beer now!' situation was about as absurdedly reassuring as any Monty Python skit I can think of.

This is spot on. Once you start forgetting some of the whales you have, you have too much.

Go to a multi-day summer concert, take a couple cases of beer, past a note on it saying "Free Beer". You clear out your cellar and become a superstar at the concert. I have a friend who'll be doing this soon.

Did I mention my spreadsheet is color-coded? Green highlighting for "drink in the next year," yellow for "drink in the next couple years," purple for "OK to age long-term"... And it also lists which beers are in the beer fridge vs. in the cellar, as well as bottle size.

I know it's totally geeky, but it has seriously helped me manage my inventory so none of my beer goes bad.

    Information = power.

I guess, somewhat of a follow up question; although a few of you have already answered... How many bottles do you have in your cellar currently?

I keep it small and manageable, 23 bottles and 12 cans.

When you are sneaking new bottles into the house because you don't want that "look" from your family.

I have the same, just with a little less detail, since my cellar is only ~40 beers, and about 12 of those should really be had relatively fresh.

I have a ton of brews too. That's why I started doing Tastings or "Beer Nights" to help clean some out. Also I have gotten a lot of friends into craft now. Win, Win, Win!

I'll be where you are (or hope to be) eventually. But it might take a while, I've got a few Bigfoot, Adam, Stone IRS, Abyss, Expedition, Old Stock, Arctic Devil etc. that I'm in absolutely no hurry to get rid of.

I'll know when I have too many...that will be when I start a thread bragging about all the beer I've got.....!!!

I actually have just as much beer at my disposal as everyone else, the only difference is I let all the beer stores keep them cold for me.

I have two wine boxes in the basement. Once I fill those up, I stop buying until a few spaces are empty. It seems to keep things under control.
