Since no locals have chimed in...I can't tell you of package stores... But Mellow Mushroom probably has the best variety of beers in the area..... If your going on game day....get there early...it'll fill up quick..
I’m moving my wife out next weekend to Auburn where she will start school in the fall and I will be join her later in the year. I am looking to looking for some good bottle shops to hit while I’m in town. Any suggestions? I would love to get my hands on some Good People beer. Also has anyone been to Red Clay Brewing? It’s not even a listed brewery on beer advocate yet. Thanks for the help!
Haven't been to Auburn in a few years but I recommend The Hound and Mellow Mushroom for good beer lists. Avondale Bar & Taproom looks cool too but I haven't checked it out yet. Auburn doesn't have any bottle shops and liquor stores in Alabama don't typically have good beer selections. The Good People website shows their beer can be found at these retail locations in Auburn: Winn Dixie Supermarket - 1617 S College St Earth Fare market - 1550 Opelika Rd BP gas station - 120 E Samford Ave
Kold keg, z&z, gas station on Samford next to Amsterdam cafe, earth fare. Momma goldberg's, the hound, mellow mushroom for draft. You might find snake handler on draft at one of those places.
Forgot to add fink's for draft beer. Join the group AU Beer on Facebook to see what beer is available around town.
^^^ I was surprised to find a couple interesting things in this BP gas station's cooler, including bourbon-barrel-aged Dark Planet by Straight to Ale (http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22655/172300/). It ain't exactly Bourbon County Stout, but I was afraid I wasn't going to find anything other than Coors Lite when I was down there.
this still holding true for a good list? I'll be up there for the San Jose State game. Been a lot of years since I was last in Auburn.
The BP is an Exxon now, but Google Maps still thinks it's a BP, but other than that, I think that list is still accurate. The BP/Exxon recently removed all the bombers from the refrigerator cases. I asked the guy working the front desk at the time what happened to them, but he didn't know. It's a shame, because they had bottles of Fifty-Fifty Eclipse. I'm glad I bought one before they disappeared. According to seekabrew.com, Fifty-Fifty doesn't even distribute to AL, so I have no idea how those bottles got there. I went to The Hound for the first time last night, and they had a pretty good beer list. Nothing that would change your life, but they did have w00tstout on tap, which is pretty cool. I haven't been to Momma Goldberg's or Mellow Mushroom yet. Maybe somebody else here can report in on those.
Wow..just now seeing this thread. I am a fairly recent graduate from Auburn (2014), but no longer local. Best places for beer locally were The Hound (food is awesome as well, and check out the bourbon), Mellow Mushroom (they used to get the special kegs: Hopslam, KBS, etc), and Avondale (more focused on spirits, but you can find some more eclectic taps). Skybar recently renovated and put in a bunch of taps, but you'll have to fight the college kids and the taps aren't anything crazy. Momma Goldbergs has a few locations but the Thatch St one has more taps IIRC. A new place has opened recently called The Depot. I know the managers, and the bartender that are moving over there. Haven't been though, but it wouldn't surprise me if they have a few decent taps, but a large drink menu. Tacorita is good for food, beer is the cheap stuff there though. There weren't any really good bottle shops when I was there. Grocery stores have pretty large selections. Both Krogers are good. World Market in Tiger town has some under the radar stuff. I've found some Jester King shelf stuff there. But by and far the best shop in the area is just across the river down in Columbus, GA. Maltitude. Absolutely awesome shop and the guys who work there are great. Its about a 30 minute drive.
I did end up at the gas station next to Amsterdam's (which was delicious) and got some Westbrook IPA there. Some really great offerings, but man, was it pricey. $15.99 for a sixer?
