Is Augsburg worth a visit? It's never struck me as a beer town. But the town seems to have a few breweries and is in the "pub crawl" section of CAMRA's Good Beer Guide to Germany. Anything in Augsburg to do or see while sobering up between pub visits?
Not a lot to do inbetween but worth doing for beers! Our Deutsch drinking crew visited last week. I had to cut away early the day before so never made the Augsburg leg, although I have been to a few bars there over the years (Charly Brau and one of the others listed) BM me if you want with your email addy and I can send you the plan (PDF format) which includes maps of how to get to the various venues, opening times, beer listings etc ... 6 venues in total
Thanks, I'll send you my details. There is a fest in Augsburg in early October: http://www.augsburger-dult.com/startseite/ German fest = bier available
I stayed in Augsburg about 3 years ago... Nice city.... I did go by Charlybrau but didn't visit. I did make a couple of stops each at König Von Flandern , which had a nice doppelbock at the time, decent food and A-1 service; and at Bräustüberl zum Thorbräu , which had a better doppelbock available. König was right downtown, with Thorbräu a bit on the edge of town. Both did the job. As for sites, there's the Fuggerei, which was built almost 500 years ago by a wealthy patron (Jakob Fugger) as the worlds first low-rent housing district. The town square is nice, with the Rathaus, statues (Augustus Caesar - hence Augsburg), fountains and biergartens... Close to München and Stuttgart as well... Prosit!
Took the family to Augsburg in September of 2011. We stayed at a very pleasant, well priced & clean hotel immediately across the street from the Fuggerei. S-bahn stops outbound (#2) immediately across the street with inbound (#1) towards the bahnhof & centrum on the other side of the building & across the street. The #1 or #2 connect at Königsplatz for the #3/4 that run from Königsplatz to the Bahnhof. It is actually a nice walk of 1 block from Königsplatz to the Bahnhof. http://www.jakoberhof.de/ Had free wifi & served breakfast with the room. ***OF NOTE*** The hotel jakober hof we stayed at 3 building away from the Augusta Bräu which is no longer brewing their product at that site. We met the owner: Herr Engelsmann on a Saturday morning by chance while walking around the building. Their parking lot is used for a flea market on Saturdays & the Augusta brewery's bottle shop (Behind the brewery) was still open as of September 2011 with their whole range of products. Augusta has been brewed at Schloßbrauerei Unterbaar in Baar since the summer of 2010. Riegele only takes groups of 15 or more at 14.50EUR per person. Went to König Von Flandern which we would never go to again. Service BAD. Food Cold. Would strongly suggest the Ratskeller Augsburg for lunch & dinner. EACH http://www.ratskeller-augsburg.de/ Make advanced reservations. They book early. Fuggerei is worth paying the entry fee to see & can be completed in a couple hours of free time. Also we went to the Augsburg Brauhaus 1516 after we watched the game with Hannover/Augsburg. The free bus ride dumped us (& all the Hannover fans) at the train station. Took it kinda as a hint... (laughs) Anyhow. Food was fair. Bit noisy. Could not tell if they actually brewed their own beer or was some kind of tied house. Beer offerings were OK. Would go back to Augsburg for a further look in the future. We were only there from a Friday afternoon til Sunday AM with the purpose to see the Hannover/Augsburg game. Headed to Stuttgart from Augsburg for Cannstatter Volksfest!!!
