It would almost kill me if Schell's stopped making their Hefe. Luckily Utepils also makes a good Hefe but Schell's Hefe has such a tradition and is an outstanding, award winning beer.

Unfortunately maybe Schell's Hefe is not a great selling beer. I wonder if Schell's is testing out the sales of their new Kolsch this summer as a possible seasonal replacement.

It seems like everyone is making a Kolsch now.

In the comments, the brewer states that "no one stops making a beer because it sells too well" (I'm paraphrasing).

Says, "101022" on the cans and packaging.

    Whew.

Looks like best by Oct. 10, this year?

Checking my beers and I've reviewed 26 by Schell -- but not the Weizen.

Just one of those styles I only grab when my mood is right.

As some one accurately noted "it's tough to sell a beer when it is never available at liquor stores".

And sometimes it's not available at liquor stores because when it was in their cooler, no one bought it, so the retailer no longer orders it from the distributor...

    It's a !@#$ing vicious circle, I tell ya!

That could be true with all these hazy's and sours crowding out other beers but I see a lot of beers that don't sell on shelves by me.

Yeah, but think about all the ones you don't see anymore...

I always wonder, "Gee, did some poor bastard really buy that year and a half old ABC Pale Ale or the distributor really pick that up and credit the store?" The latter could happen - kinda like the lottery, some people do win it.

My guess is generally someone buys the old beers...but I've seen the same old beers that I've date checked sit on shelves for another year (when they were already more than year old when I checked them)...eventually someone buys them I guess...)

I would say "FIFY" but, IDK your feeling, but that is mine. Schell's hefe remained, IMO, the best MN-brewed hefe to (hopefully not) the end.

If they stop making their hefe, and ramp up seltzers, hazy and lo-cal garbage.........

    Schell's, you're better than that.

No doubt. I guess they have to make money but it's sad to see from such a historic point and really for the past 20 years or so a top notch quality brewery....luckily Utepils and a few others are around to assume their role as a German style brewery. Waldmann, Bad Weather, Fair State....and a few others is where I'll be turning to. Guessing the Schell Bock is the next to go?

Hmm. Go to Schell's website, click the Facebook or Twitter links and get redirected to a Grainbelt specific page. Guess I can tell what the big seller is out of New Ulm these days.

Makes me sad if this is Schell's direction.

Their website has been horrible for several years..particularly for a brewery of their stature....It might seem I am hating on them but I love their beers....when I can find them

I agree, @ZAP. Their web site is, and has been, bad. So, @steveh, I wouldn't read too much into that.

Schell's website has been shite since it was conceptualized. Never updated and with little useful information.

OK, this thread pushed me... I'll be tasting a Grain Belt Nordeast for the first time later today in the NBW thread.

It's all your fault! :beers:
