Hey guys, wondering if any of you get bottles of the Augustiner Helles where you live or if you've seen bottles during your travels (in the US, of course). A quick online search got me a place in Georgia and State Line Liquors in MD. However, I noticed it isn't listed on the bottle list at Zum Schneider in NYC or Brauhaus Schmitz in Philly. Seems weird you may be able to get it in Maryland but not in PA or NY.
To be clear, I'm not looking for the Edelstoff, which I know is widely available, just the Lagerbier Hell. Thanks.

I, personally, have not seen any Augustiner products here in the USA during my travels aside from Edelstoff and Maximator.

EDIT: New Mexico included....but if you do find some be sure to let me know!

The importer of Augustiner to the US is Global Village Imports. They only bring in two brands: Edelstoff and Maximator.

    Cheers!

I've only ever seen Edelstoff and Maximator, like Jack mentioned. While those are fine in their own right, I'd take normal lagerbier hell or their dunkel over them every time. Their pils is also probably the best one from Munich...even if nobody drinks it there :stuck_out_tongue:
Hopefully one of these days they'll send some different bottles/kegs over here. I'd be all over those 1/2L bottles if they sent those.

The info that came up for me was through Google and the site Wine-searcher.com (should never trust a wine site for beer, I know). I went to State Line Liquors website after Jack posted that disappointing info and indeed they only listed the Edelstoff. But then I checked the other place the wine site listed, Tower Beer Wine and Spirits in Atlanta and they have it listed on their site...but with a picture of the Augustiner Pilsner. So it's probably just the Edelstoff as well.

I actually emailed Augustiner's headquarters in Munich asking them about their lagerbier hell in the U.S. They were very nice. Here is what they said about it:

(I told them I was still very much a fan. They send me a clinking beer glasses emoji and a smiley, haha.)

I emailed Global Village imports for the very same reason. The edelstoff just isn't the same for me. I have the identical problem with another Bavarian Brewer that doesn't export their whole line. I think they do it to drive me crazy!!!

I live here in Atlanta and have tried to find the Augustiner Helles. Would love to get my hands on some. You are correct, Tower only carries the two styles, not the Helles. I don't think I've even seen the Pilsner.

Shame that they don't export it. I wonder why they send over the edelstoff and maximator but not the helles.

Because the Helles is kegged for sale in their restaurants and Biergartens in Munich. Yeah, they're selfish bastards, but who can blame them?

And the whole point of Edelstoff is for export, isn't it, with that additional half percent abv?

And I would be a more regular consumer of Augustiner beer if they would just put a packaged date on their beers.

Ironically the importer of Augustiner beer (Global Village Imports) is located about a mile away from me (they rent office space from my local Retail Beer Distributor). I have had conversations with the owner of the Retail Beer Distribibutor about how fresh the Augustiner beer he sells is and he just shrugs and tells me all that he knows is the date he enters the beer into his inventory system. I refuse to buy this beer under these conditions.

    Non-cheers to no beer dates!:slight_frown:

True but they also sell the bottles across Europe. I'm guessing it's a freshness issue and not wanting to sell their best beer as 6+ months old to buyers here.

It also gets around Europe to some degree. In Salzburg, it is available at some pubs and they have a restaurant, the Goldener Kugel, in the Altstadt which serves all their beers. I miss that place... Augustiner Hell also for some reason seems to be a popular beer for young guys to drink at Bavarian railway stations too.

The Münchner Augustiner, of course, has nothing to do with the Müllner Augustiner in Salzburg which is my avatar. These breweries were just once part of the same monastic order.
