Looking at places to enjoy a beer on my upcoming two week vacation to Germany, I have stumbled across Augustiner (yes first timer here).

I start the trip off in Munich for 3 days, then to the Zuspitze, over to fussen for a day, then to Rothenburg for a couple days, then to bamberg, then to Frankfurt for 3 days (one of which is catching the last game of the season for Eintracht) and then one day back in Munich before flying out.

Looking at where I want to drink in Munich when I arrive, google maps gives me three seemingly good choices:

    1) Augustiner Bräustuben - on Landsberger
    2) Augustinerbrau - also on Landsberger
    3) Augustiner-Keller - on Arnulfstraße

Are 1 & 2 connected to each other? Is one better than the others in any significant way? I am hoping to get some beer served directly from the wood barrel. Therefore, if one location does that I would give that the edge.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Number 2 is the actual Augustiner brewery, Number 1 is the tavern attached to the brewery, and Number 3 is the brewery's Biergarten.

Best news? They're not all that far apart if you check a map.

And what will they be like during Oktoberfest when I go?

The Keller is usually pretty mellow -- it's where people go to get away from the Oktoberfest.

OTOH -- the times I've been there during Fest Days they didn't serve the actual Festbier -- that seemed reserved for the Wies'n tent only.

If the weather holds up, I'd go for the Keller. It's one of the nicer biergartens in town and you get to see a bit more pomp and circumstance there than elsewhere. It's also unique in that Edelstoff is the default beer being poured. I actually prefer the normal Hell, but a 1L of Edelstoff is something you probably won't encounter every day.
The only knock on the place is that the bathrooms are a bit sparse. They aren't as scary the ones in most U-bahn stations, but they're a major step down from just about any other place of that caliber.

Excellent to know! I'm quite relived! I figured it'd be crowded everywhere in München. As for the Festbier, I will be attending Oktoberfest for two days; and I'll be going during the week so it should be slower.

As to your point Domingo, thanks for that update as well, maybe I'll be "relieved" somewhere else!

And I've had the Edelstoff (not my first trip to Germany), and I loved it. I rated it high at a 4.4 so that'll work out for me.

My ‘vote’ is that you go to Augustiner am Platzl and pre-order your own barrel; a great way to make friends!!

"At the Augustiner am Platzl we still serve traditionally out of the wooden barrel – every day. Enjoy a good, long stored beer, thats refreshing and beneficial.

Why don’t you order your very own Augustiner beer in a wooden barrel at your table to serve yourself? If you order in advance you can have either 30 liters."

    Prost!

Well I don't think I need my own barrel....But ya really hoping to get a beer out of one. If Augustiner am Platzl is the only place to get that then I guess that is my stop. Hopefully the food is good as well.

I honestly can't recall the facilities -- and that usually means they didn't make a big or bad impression. I think I may have snuck into the Bierhall that's at the Keller, but I really don't remember.

Look at my last video above -- that's at the Keller. I'm also pretty sure Augustiner serves from the wood at all of their venues -- including the Oktoberfest tent:

The Keller serves Edelstoff from the wood. Bräustuben and Am Platzl serve Helles from the wood. If @orangestorm87 has the time, he should try both.

What about their other beers? I know I had a Pils and a Dunkel at am Platzl, but I didn't see it poured.
Agreed, but he shouldn't think am Platzl is the only place he has to go.

They aren't unusable, I just remember them not being clean (or pleasant smelling) in spite of a cleaning lady being on duty. I had the same impression both times I've been. Compared to mostly comparable biergartens like the Chinesischer Turm, Menterschwaige, WaWi, Seehaus, etc. they just weren't well kept. Didn't keep me from using them when necessary, though!

Oh yeah - pretty sure the only other beer option at Augustiner Keller is the weissbier. It's from bottles. Every time I've encountered Augustiner pils anywhere it was also poured from a bottle. I've been told draft exists, but you have to know where to look.

Could be worse, could be one of those Imbiss stands along the Autobahn! :grinning:

You can see a patron carrying one as he watches the tapping. But all I ever had at the Keller was Edelstoff, it was am Platzl where I tried other styles.

Correction -- I had Maximator at the Keller Bierhall in May -- they still had it just before Frühlingsfest. Again, I don't recall the pour, but I asked for a half liter.
