I am hopeful to reach Oklahoma and Texas either in the Fall or Winter. This weekend I came across two blogs regarding Austin Beerworks (links below). I see they have several beers with good scores / number of ratings. However, the last thread on this site via search is from 2017 asking if they sell beer to go. Does anyone have any experiencing a visit to this brewery and/or their beers? Thanks in advance. Michael Graham, co-founder of Austin Beerworks interviewed regarding pricing during COVID. https://www.goodbeerhunting.com/sig...prices-presents-long-term-risks-for-breweries Michael Graham interviewed by Doug Veliky, CFO at Revolution Brewing regarding twitter and other topics. Austin Beerworks put a price increase for to go Hazy IPAs as a vote on twitter (users picked the 2nd highest price of the four), and this is part of what was discussed. I found this interview very interesting and informative.
Its been a while since I have been to Austin Beerworks, so I don't know the particulars now. Though their beers are very good. Well worth seeking out. Last I visited the brewery it was just a warehouse with a small tasting room area. You can get their beers at a lot of places around Austin though and I'm sure they are selling beer to go from the brewery now.
Austin Beer works was extremely active in trying to get the Texas Legislature to fix the brewery laws to allow for sales to go. They definitely do sell beer to go. During this COVID lockdown my wife and I went to go buy six packs from them once. They make very good beer. Did you have any questions other than if they sell to go?
Thank you @champ103 for your feedback regarding a brewery visit and judgment of their beers; and @Roadkizzle for your response. My question was regarding a brewery visit or the quality of their beers, which it appears you both like. Michael Graham addressed the to-go sales, which he stated in the youtube video would be the primary beneficial change in Texas laws for his brewery as result of The Rona. I never heard of this brewery before stumbling on to the two linked items. I became interested in visiting once things are reopened for general bar seating. I sadly haven't been exposed to many Texas beers beyond Shiner and Lone Star, but hope to rectify this sad lack of exposure soon. Prairie Artisan is the only Oklahoma brewery I have had, also am looking to explore a few more, though not sure if I can handle Hanson Fest. Cheers!
There is lots more to Texas breweries than Shiner Austin Beerworks will always be one of the breweries I recommend to people (a shipment just hit Houston not too long ago, so I need to go track some down). You also have to check out Live Oak at least, if you get a chance to make it to Austin.
Been to Austin a couple times now and they are a quality spot, but not amongst my favorites of those I have tried, personally
Thanks, any other suggestions you wish to share? Unfortunately all my previous trips to Texas were also my pre-craft days (2014 and prior), where I drank whiskey or bourbon year round, and gin in the summer.
Oddwood Ales and Live Oak are my two favorite breweries. Oddwood does sour beers and hoppy beers but I also love most of their lagers. Great small place with very good pizza. Live Oak specializes in German and continental European styles. They're one of the few places with a Grodzisky. They have a great beer garden. If there's any specific styles you like most then it'll be easier to tailor suggestions.
I love most styles, NEIPAs are one of the few I don’t actively seek out. I try to hit a breweries best offerings when visiting. I had my first Grodziskie beer a few weeks ago by Dovetail in Chicago. This is a very unique style, they did a great job and your recommendation of Live Oak sounds great on my end. Will consider Oddwood as well, time permitting, as I love a good sour. Thanks!
Live oak, oddwood, st elmo, abgb, abw, pint house would be your best bets for a lot of different styles and flavors. All within a 20 minute drive from downtown. Be advised that Austin is going through a bit of a shut down because of spikes covid so call ahead to breweries would be a good idea.
Jester King and Live Oak are my 2 favorites in Austin, of those I have visited. Jester King is right there with Seattle's Holy Mountain and Denver's Trve for my favorite taproom/beer garden/what have you, for both the beer and setting. Beyond those two, ABGB and Oddsides were really good too. I did find Austin Beerworks to be quality though. I am sure you would enjoy your visit if they are who choose to hit up.
red horn, batch craft beer and kolaches, pinthouse, southern heights are all other excellent Austin brewery options. enjoy
Many worthy beyond these but this is my top 5 Austin breweries if pressed: Austin Beer Garden Brewery Pinthouse Pizza Jester King Live Oak Austin Beerworks
