gday all b.a users in canada. name is ben, just introducing myself to this part of the forum as i will be moving to live in canada for approx 1 1/2 - 2 years. the plan of traveling to canada and then through the states and after that flying to europe in the long run is to learn as much as i can about beer, gain experience brewing in as many small brewies that are keen for any help doing what they require and trying to find some work in different bars based around beer... my knowledge of the canadian beer scene isnt huge unfortunately as its hard to really find out much being in australia but i leave on the 27th and arrive the same day due to time zone so ill be in your country on sunday! anyway the first thing id love to know is are there a list of 10 or so beers i should really look out for whether they be session beers, rare beers or just extremely high rated beers in the community. anything like some bars and what not that i should look for or even small brewies would be great! oh and im flying into vancouver first as i have to due to some passport reasons..

Nice to meet you Ben! I'm Steve, from Montreal, Quebec. Where will you be staying in Canada, or is that still up in the air? Let me know if you plan to hit Montreal, I'll be glad to show you around! You ask some interesting questions about the Canadian beer scene, but the truth is it's hard to answer them all in a general way. Each province has their own specialties and some simply have much stronger beer cultures than others. My best suggestion if you want to check out some of our quality offerings is to look at the list of Canadian top beers:

While this might be open to difference of opinion, it's not a bad place to start!

find ye some Driftwood while in Vancouver.
do not drink ye our pisswater known as Molson or Labatts or Rickards unless you truly hate yourself and our country.

Definitely try out Red Racer IPA by Central City. Also, many beers from Unibroue, Charlevoix, or Dieu Du Ciel are always a great buy if you ever find them.

You should be aware that much of the Canadian beer market is fragmented. Breweries are only beginning to expand outside of their provincial barriers. You can find many of the breweries listed in other provinces, though only at times and not their full selection.

If in BC hunt out the BC beers. If in Ontario, do the same. Etc...

PS: if you bring me Tam Tams I will love you forever. I used to buy those at the foreign food stores in Japan but I have no idea where to find that in Montreal.

If in Alberta, try to make it to the provincial capital city, Edmonton. Sherbrooke Liquor Store recently claimed the title of largest beer selection in Canada, getting close to 1000 beers.

If you stop in Ottawa our breweries are:
Beau's (Vankleek Hill about 1 hour outside of Ottawa)
    Kichesippi
    Broadhead
    Hogs Back

Beau's and Kichesippi seem like the best places to look for contacts, Broadhead is a pretty small operation so that might be tougher.

As far as bars and restaurants:
    Wellington Gastropub
    Pub Italia
    The Manx
    The Cheshire Cat
    Millstreet Brewpub
    Clocktower Brewpubs
    Brothers Beer Bistro
    Black Tomato
    Big Rig Brewpub (coming soon)

Smattering of other places with decent menus around town and some interesting options on the Gatineau (read: French) side of the river. Check out bartowel.com for the latest Ontario news and happenings.
