Okay. Here's the runoff poll between 7% and 10%, and deciding on the toasted vs. non-toasted issue.

If you are not a believer in specifying grain bills by percentages (due to non-proportional flavor/color extraction for different grains at various mash efficiencies), the assumed mash efficiency in the final recipes will be 70%, if that helps.

Straight plurality takes this one. If you're more concerned about the amount of oatmeal than with the toast/non-toast question (or vice versa), you might consider jumping on a bandwagon.

This poll will be open for 36 hours.

(For those who don't know what I'm talking about, see this thread about the first beer we did (and the
bazillion ensuing polls and the final recipes)...

I vote for (i) 7% because this isn't an oatmeal stout and (ii) toasted because there is nothing similar to brown, amber, or victory in the recipe.

7% and I guess if we're using oats we should toast them.

10% toasted. I believe it's going to need all of those oats.

7% and toasted...at this point it's no longer an American Stout either way, but I just can't vote for 10%...I just can't.

Sort of ironic that the BJCP's #1 commercial example of American Stout is named for an English Poet/Playwright and is made with oats, and is (now) called an Oatmeal Stout by the brewer, although oats have apparently always been part of its formulation. Just embrace style guidelines as hopelessly messed up, especially when it comes to distinguishing among substyles, and your disdain will diminish.

7% toast. Should be fine. Now if we could just sneak in 5% dark crystal..;-)

    Cheers!

10% toasted to help make up for the lack of crystal

Ha, well, there's really no disdain. I just can't seem to reconcile that much oatmeal in a non-oatmeal stout. Regardless of whether I think it will taste good or not.

Toasting sounds like work. Can I sub-contract out that part? Mostly when I make beer I just want to hang out and look cool.

    hahaha I'm not THAT lazy!!!

Truthfully... My (instantaneous, unfiltered) thoughts on that type of thing is that if you're really wanting to do that little work, you could always buy commercial beer.

If you lived in my part of the country, you would welcome the excuse to turn the oven on and some extra heat to the house. I don't know that toasting oats will do much for the beer, but it might help melt the ice on my kitchen window.

I voted 10% untoasted since the oats are for mouthfeel

    7%, toasted.

I like the idea of toasting them since we aren't adding any crystal or any other specialty malts to the grist.

I'm not opposed to the oats by any means though, just not 10 percent in there. I have a stout with 10-12% right now that I don't consider an oatmeal stout by much.
