Is this s genuine 72 hour poll, meaning the poll closes on Wednesday March 6 at ~ 5:02 PM Eastern?

My vote will change IFF a lower ABV (other than Belgian Pale) stays in the running, so c'mon you Belgian Pale fence-riders....just a little over two days to come to your senses. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, for me this is the other big argument in favor of American Brown - there's a plenty of variables in barleywine, but you know from the outset roughly what you're going to end up with - loads of pale base malt, loads of bittering hops, and the rest is largely window dressing. Whereas with American Brown the whole style is up for grabs - is it a sedate little caramelly number, or a big hoppy roasty bruiser? Is it all about the chocolate, the toastiness, the caramel, the late hops or some combination of the above? To me it feels like there's a lot more at stake at there...

Jackman, I hope. I'd like to have a reference for a bruiser brown outside of Janet's; I have a good stronger dark mild recipe already.

Absolutely. And if we go with Grant, I think we are automatically pigeon holed into English Brown Ale before voting even begins.

Voted Brown. Its one style I haven't got a good recipe for so would love to see what everyone else does. Just made a barleywine but it would be interesting to compare the recipes and everyones thoughts.

Brown ale all the way because it is an underappreciated style and could be a lot of fun.

Would this be a UK or USA style brown ale?

And if UK style, northern or southern?

Just thought I'd add here... In the past, I have refrained from voting and I will continue to refrain. But going forward, in the case of any tie that would otherwise cause a run-off vote, I reserve the right to cast a tie-breaker vote. (That doesn't mean that there won't be run-offs for other reasons.)

If Brown Ale happens to win, there would be another poll to select the specific (sub)style. I'd put every applicable current BCJP sub-style in the poll. Same goes for Barleywine or any potential winner that isn't already sub-style specific.

All the Brown Ale people are starting to sound convincing, I'm considering changing my vote from Barleywine to Brown, but I need to hear some more convincing

right now the vote stands Barleywine 14 vs Brown Ale 13, so I have the deciding vote, convince me to change

I feel like there’s room in my repertoire for a brown.
In the 5.2-5.5 range, maybe a drop or two more or less.
I’m into noble hopping at the moment but I also like American hops in an English grain bill.
I think a brown opens up the color spectrum a little more.
The focus is on the little things, not just beefing up the gravity.
    Feels more crafty and appealing.
    And perfectly average.
    Or averagely perfect.

No interest in Brown ale. I'll take anything else on the list .

I still might need some more brown convincing too. I do agree that it would make for some interesting discussions. However, I can’t see myself wanting to brew a brown anytime soon (just a personal preference). That being said, I’d be fine with any of those styles in the end.

Impartiality. At times I will have to make a judgement call based on a poll result, e.g. when trying to decide if there is a central tendency in the data. I feel like it's better to not be too invested in a personal vision for the recipe.

yay - so happy to see this starting. Its a bit of an event for me :-) I would love to see a style without a ton of hops or high abv come up, and a brown ale seems to fit the ticket perfectly. also, like it was mentioned above, it could be a great dicussion thread. on the other hand, I haven't brewed a barleywine either, so it should be interesting whatever is decided

If we can come up with something close to Paradigm Brown from Kelsen Brewing then I’ll change my vote.

That is the only brown ale I have had that I truly loved. It’s more bold then subtle but well balanced at the same time. Best version of the style that I’ve had for sure.
