Because a brown ale can be one of your social or session beers in addition to other low abv brews.

Having choice , especially with the mob that rolls in here, is nice when you are serving several or just yourself.

Time to follow up with a less-hoppy and perhaps more malty quaff for your sliders-in. (alternate name for your place....."The Slide Inn")

    Check out the BJCP fo16B
Has there ever been a successful not-so-discrete AP coup? :astonished:

@riptorn hahahahahahahaah, clearly u have not notices the multipal batches of Irish stout every year an I make more than what is here. Also, but on light is a malt bomb, low on hops as is the chocolate stout, oatmeal stout and others.
    Quit editing my posts, hahahahahahahahhaa,,,,ripper

People actually enjoy drinking barley wine? I can’t even fathom wanting to have 5 gallons of one sitting around.. I don’t even know people I could give it to to get rid of it.

I know BIL and DDB made everybody think they’re cool now but do we really want to make a beer that needs extended aging for this project?

Yeah, I too have no desire to brew a beer as big as Barleywine. And I'm pretty sure my mashtun isn't big enough to do one all grain.

I do like barley wine, but a full batch of something that strong would definitely be a bit of a mission to chug through.

Edit: I'd also stand by my argument that there's a lot more to be learnt by going through the Averagely Perfect process with a brown ale, because there are a lot more places that we could potentially end up depending on how different people think of the style.

Seeing that Maibock has no love I went with BA to see how close it comes to my 3 versions if it wins. Also good for a BW if it's around 7/8%.

Call me crazy, but to my taste buds, Newcastle Brown is lame. I hope this averaging thing does not end up with a clone of Newcastle.

Dude, this is going to be a BA Averagely Perfect brew. It’s going to be awesome!
Don’t worry it’ll be WAY better than Newcastle.

Old NB or New Lagunitas-ified NB? :sunglasses:

I voted brown ale as well. I can't imagine I'll drink it all, but what the hell! Would be nice to know I can whip up a batch of something like Bell's Best Brown should the occasion arise in the future.

I agree. There are a ton of possibilities with a brown.

    How apropos is that article?
Exactly what can be done here.
It doesn’t have to be your grandfather’s brown ale.

If RIS had the votes, I’d go there because I never brewed one and it is a bucket list beer. Barleywine was a bucket list beer, but I finally brewed one in 2018. I’d also consider belgian pale ale because I somehow messsd up the one i last brewed, so it’d be getting back on the horse. But browns are a favorite style of mine. I’d be interested in what we come up with to compare with what I usually do

Lots of non-strategic voters out there (including me at the moment). We've got until tomorrow afternoon to make adjustments, but let me suggest that it makes sense to do so sooner rather than later if you want to try to get a groundswell going for something other than brown ale or barleywine. May I humbly suggest that anyone preferring Belgian pale ale to those styles consider switching now so that it becomes a true three-way race? In the absence of a viable third option, everyone is simply going to choose between the two front-runners, which may not actually be the top preferences of very many people.

Cards on the table: I will switch my vote to porter, RIS, or landbier if any of those surpasses Belgian pale ale.
