Huh, what do you know...Thanks for pointing this out. Glad it's making it into bottles, too (at some point I hope).

Alrighty, folks... got a couple of questions to answer. Or so it seems.

    1. Callipygian. We're currently hoping to bottle it at the very end of this month. I don't have an exact day for a tap room release just yet, but All The Things are in motion. And @boutwell, our naming schemes aren't borne out of any master plan. When you put out as many beers as we do and every one of them has a working name and then a real name, things get confusing. Callipygian has appeared as at least three different names in the last few years, but each one of those was a single keg made specifically for a festival. This will be a 70-ish oak barrel batch of goodness. And I'd wanted to use the name "Callipygian" for a beer for over five years... just had to find the right project. This is the one, methinks.

    2. @FarmerTed, hopefully I didn't make too much of a fool of myself while talking with Jay. I could have babbled on for another few hours and woke up thinking about better ways I could have described a few things. Hindsight is rough like that. If anyone listens to the podcast, I can try to answer any loose ends...

    3. @ablackshear, that's the first potential issue I've heard of, so I popped open a bottle of 2015 UJ this morning (great morning beer) and tried it next to the 2016 for comparison along with three well-trained brewers here. The bottle I opened definitely didn't have a lactic acid twang and none of us could detect any evidence of infection. I could arguably see a "metallic" flavor, but it comes off as more of a charred malt flavor for me. Nowhere near as much "ashtray" flavor as something like Mephistopheles, which uses a ton of black malt. But that's just one bottle that I tried out of a couple of thousand cases. If you have a bottle or two of 2015 left and you're local, would you be able to bring them in? I'd love to try one with some other trained tasters, use another for lab testing, and trade you out for bottles that you'll enjoy more.

    4. Xolotl. If anyone has tried Mayan Goddess in the past at our tap room, that's the base for Xolotl. The cool part is that the guy who came up with it, Thoma Ledder, had never had any of the Mexican Hot Chocolate-esque stouts out there when he started making Mayan Goddess three years ago. He'd never heard of Abraxas or Hunahpus. He just came up with the idea on his own and rolled with it. And it seemed like a pretty cool project when we had some extra Bourbon barrels to fill.

    What did I miss, folks?

I've only listened to the first hour (the second isn't posted yet), but I thought it was pretty good. Anyone who cares about the history of Avery's barrel series will probably like it.

Thanks for your reply. I should put a disclaimer: I am very bad at describing flavors so take my description with a grain of salt, though both me and my girlfriend could tell it was off. I noticed it when I smelled the bottle as soon as I opened it, and then after I poured it and took a sip, but I didn't say anything because I wanted to see if she noticed it without me influencing her, and she noticed right away too.

I poured what I could back into the bottle (lost about half to foam trying to use a makeshift funnel) and capped it as well as I could, I'm happy to bring that one and others in for you to test. I don't get up to Boulder all that often, but I'll try to make a trip up there this weekend

I've had probably 15 or so bottles of UJ across the different batches and never had an issue before last night, it's always delicious

    No worries, Dr. ablackshear...

It takes years of training to get a consistent vocabulary going for beer tasting, and you can never get rid of subjectivity. We run into this all the time. But if you can save that bottle as well as others you have, please do. I'll make it worth your while. When tracking down a potential off-flavor there can be a daunting amount of variables. So all information is valuable, including the timestamps on those bottles.

And don't rush up to Boulder on our account... unless I hear of other issues I'll assume it's an isolated occurrence, and if I hear of more issues and we need to do some rapidfire research I'm happy to head to you to get the bottles.

In any case, keep me updated if you're heading up here and we'll make it right. The email address is [email protected], and I'm more likely to see that than a message on BA.

    Rock on...

I remember seeing one of the big name stores posted it on FB a couple weeks ago (might have been Mile High, can't remember). Besides that, no. Been wondering when it's gonna drop myself.

Both Old Perseverance and Expletus have been very elusive, strange...

Expletus is pretty nice, but I would definitely rather have the Old Perseverance instead. Hopefully, it shows up here in GJ.

    Cheers!

I was surprised to hear how little Old Perseverance is making it to distro in CO based on the case number. Wonder if the release sold a lot more or if there's more leaving the state.

Yeah. Not a lot floating around compared to the last few releases. Its like the old days!

Speaking of Old Perseverance, I cracked a bottle last night and wowee is that stuff boozy. The flavors are there and I liked the beer quite a bit, but unlike fresh Uncle Jacobs the booze is right up in your face. I suspect Old P will age really well.

Yep, it was Mile High. They still had some today. Grapevine said next week for their shipment. They did get more Old Perseverance though.
