I'm with you. I appreciate Avery's ability to experiment from the perspective of "art is art; it's supposed to be weird." But I can't afford art and many of the recent releases are just too niche for me.

Anyway, although I'm not a huge peated whiskey (whisky) freak, I do enjoy sipping on some Scotch so I might have to check out the Islay.

If anyone is interested in scotch whisky aged big beers, you could do worse than checking out Harviestoun's Ola Dubh series. They're shelf turds, but when I had one in Edinburgh several years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the taste and viscosity. And I'm definitely a bourbon guy.

I have a very definitive smoke/peat limit, and the Islay went right up to it, but didn't cross it. I liked it quite a bit.

This seems to be a very polarizing beer from what I have seen, but it looks like everyone at least agrees that it's peaty and smokey as can be...

You can actually get a bit more peat if you go to the taproom and try their Charizard (Czar in Laphroaig barrels) or Burning Priest (Reverend in Laphroaig barrels). Comparatively, Islay has a more balanced blend between base beer and barrel. I prefer it to the other two, but they are worth the experience of drinking once.

The base beer for Charizard was actually a blend of the vanilla bean stout & coconut porter base beers without the adjuncts. Definitely was super peaty! I prefer Islay

Thanks for the information. For some reason I was thinking the Islay base was the stout/porter blend.

This huge bourbon peanut stout has been years in the making. Turns out, it's actually pretty hard to infuse peanut flavor into beer. Luckily, our resident beer archaeologist, professor, and brewer, Mr. Travis Rupp, hasn't stopped working on it and we finally have a delicious, decadent, and high ABV (approx. 15%) peanut stout to share.

Nut allergies beware, this is made with a ton of peanuts.

I've always loved this idea, but peanut infused beers have been mostly miss, with a couple of hits.
Part of the problem has been what is generally used for the peanut flavor, a powdered version. Most times this hits me with an off, acidic aftertaste that kills the whole thing for me.
Recently Ursula's Crustless and BA Crustless have been pretty good, though the PB flavor is on the subtle end, with the raspberry being more prominent.

Here's to hoping for a great Avery result!

If anyone can pull it off it's Avery....

Have you tried Liquid Mechanic's Peanut butter porter? It's quite peanutty and delicious.

Renegade also brews a peanut butter stout which is decent.

Haven't tried Liquid Mechanics, I havent thought much of the couple beers I've had from them and the PB beer is priced too high for me to chance it. Maybe someday I'll give it a go.
The Renegade one we had the first or second year they did it, and we had the can this past winter. We thought it was alright, but we haven't repurchased.

In general, I don't think I've ever had a peanut butter beer I was really enamored with. Most tend to be stouts and they usually just have a weird accent on the back end I'm not sure I love. I like peanut butter a lot, but I'm not sure it works particularly with stout. They're rarely bad, but I'm just not sure if it adds anything desirable. I think the best one I can recall was a PB Blonde from Blue Moon that was at GABF 5-6 years ago.

That said, the ones that have a balancing jelly element work far better for me. Ursula's crustless beers and No Crusts from FB do the job nicely. I think it's one of those situations where if you're going to go down the candy beer wormhole, you might as well go all the way.

Yeah the PB porter is a bit pricey for what you get, but I'd say it is worth trying, or at least a glass at the taproom. It is very peanut forward, but they certainly pulled it off.

Honestly I think the 15% stout is the way to go with peanut butter, I think in general most beers are too thin to try to add peanut butter to, so it comes off really artificial. Can't wait to try it.

This sounds cool, will definitely try it out. And peanut stouts aren't really a huge thing, so it's nice to have another option.

Apparently, this was released on Monday and it's in retail stores already. I'm making my way up to Avery tomorrow to try it and get some bottles. Anyone give it a try yet?

It's got some decent reviews. I'm not usually a peanut/peanut butter beer fan but I'll give it a try.
