so I was at my local beer store and noticed they had Avery's Pumpkyn beer. 2 bottles left and a limit of 1 bottle per customer. I am just getting into this very addictive hobby but was wondering if at 11.99 a bottle it was worth getting and stashing one? Can't seem to find any opinions on this beer besides the regular rankings. Thanks in advance for the advise.

I love this beer, and 11.99 is pretty much what they are priced at everywhere - Up to you to decide if that is too steep.

Pumpkyn was new this year (not to confused with Rumpkin, which has been out for a few years), so not one really knows how it will change over time. However, having had Rumpkin with 3 years on it that was sublime, and Avery's big beers being known to age well...I'd be confident in buying one and putting it aside for a long time.

ok mind is made up, I will be getting one. the fact that there were only 2 on the shelf and could only buy 1 per customer almost made me pull the trigger. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get the "don't waste your money, that beer's horrible" response from people.

Definitely worth trying, but aging it would not make sense IMO. Not sure what the barrel characteristics will do, but the pumpkin will fade for sure.

What a coincidence, I just did a side-by-side review with Rumpkin for my blog. http://mike-in-dupagebeerblog.blogspot.com/2015/01/avery-rumpkin-vs-avery-pumpkyn.html

Short version: I think Pumpkyn tastes like what would happen if Goose Island decided to make Bourbon County Pumpkin Pie Stout. Molasses, chocolate fudge, bourbon, cinnamon, nutmeg. The bourbon barrel and pumpkin pie flavors are a little less aggressive than the base beer, which really shines through more clearly than Bourbon County (usually) does when fresh, but that base beer is pretty damn close to Bourbon County. So even if the spices fade, I expect the overall flavor profile to still be pretty damn good with some age (I put one bottle aside for next winter). By contrast, Rumpkin relies more on its spice and rum barrel flavors, so I'm not sure it will hold up as well.

You got lucky with that price, $14.99 is the norm in many places.

At $12 you are indeed lucky. That's what it goes for in Boulder.

    $14 here around DC/Virginia

Avery's big beers age tremendously well.
