Definitely keeping an eye for this guy. Coconut beers are pretty great lately.

As a big Avery fan I have to ask- what beers have you tried that disappointed you? Are we looking at a large sample? Just curious. It seems like they brew such a wide range of beers there would be something for everyone.

I think Allagash Curieux is aged for 2 months. Its one of my favorite beers, killer flavors.

Avery barrel a lot of their beers for about 4 months, and I think their beers like Tweak, the vanilla bean stout and the rum barrel aged coconut porter are exactly 4 months.

Yep, Curieux is 8 weeks according to their website. An interesting contrast to some Stouts like KBS and Parabola that spend a full year aging (though it makes sense, too long a time might be too much for a Tripel and overpower some of the nuances)

Someone posted a great article written by The Brewer who runs avery's barrel program. He talked a bit about how the environment in Colorado affects the duration of the aging process. I'll post it here if I find it.

And yeah I agree that Curieux doesn't overwhelm with bourbon notes like char and vanilla which allows a very unique blend of favors since the triple itself is so great. I think that's what Avery is going for with their barrels and botanicals series compared to their other barrel series of beers.

The rum barrel part is not the hard part and Avery is not new to the rum barrel game, so I don't see any issues there. See, e.g., Momi Hawa, Black Eye, Rumpkin, and Obscuro & Nimbosus.

It will be interesting, however, to see if they get the coconut right because I thought the Vanilla Bean Stout tasted a little fake and coconut is hard to do without getting an artificial taste, IMHO.

Any sightings of this out there? My wife has been hounding me to snag one for her ever since she had the Vanilla.

    Cheers!

Anyone else hearing rumors that Avery has scrapped the Coconut Porter release with regards to using rum barrels? Instead, whisky barrels will be used.

If this turns out to be quality control issues with the Rum Barrels, it would be interesting to know the origin of these barrels. Again, rum barrels from the Caribbean and Latin American can present many challenges and concerns with quality based on a few factors.

Hopefully the Rum Barrel-Aged Coconut Porter is released in the future.

I too just saw that the rum barrels were a failure, and switching to bourbon barrels

    yeah just saw the label.

bummed to hear its not rum anymore...prob still gonna be a good coconut stout though.

it says bottled may 2016, so hopefully they put some in Bourbon barrels and some in rum barrels at the same time or else i dont see how they could switch and then bottle so soon...

I know, I was looking forward to it if it were rum barrel. I'll pass on this.

I'm not confident! Have you tried the other two in the series? Raspberry Sour and Vanilla Bean Stout?

I know I'll be passing at this point. I liked the idea of the mix of the rum barrel with the coconut. Not sure if it will be as good with bourbon barrels, but its just not as intriguing anymore.

Rum barrels can be really tricky. I've had the displeasure of tasting two Rum BA beers that were grossly infected. Acetobacter must really enjoy rum or something. Good on Avery to not put out inferior product

i think it comes down to where the barrels are sourced. usually hard to find and not kept in the best conditions.
