I heard some anti-drug group was giving them guff because it sounds awfully close to meth addict. Even at Mountain Sun for stout month they were calling Meph-addict Coffeestopheles. Super weak

I had a feeling it was something along those lines. I didn't know Mountain sun was calling it something different. It was called Meph addict at the Strong ale fest...

Hola... this is Andy Parker, the Barrel Herder at Avery. Meph Addict, Coffestopheles, and Tweak are indeed all the same beer... sorry about the confusion.

Basically, we submitted Meph Addict to the TTB and they rejected it on the grounds that it's too close to a drug reference. We still needed a name for serving the beer at the Suns' Stout month, so we listed it as Coffestopheles as a stopgap measure. But none of us really like that name, so we recently came up with Tweak, which we have submitted to the TTB in the hopes that we can call it that. And we could still call it Meph Addict while serving it here at the brewery for Strong Ale Fest... we just need a TTB approved name to be able to sell it to other folk. I haven't heard of any anti-drug groups complaining about it, so I doubt that's the case.

Once the TTB has approved a name, then we can legally send it out a little wider. We don't have any plans to bottle it or anything, but we'd love to send it out to more festivals and beer bars and keep everything legal. Things go a lot smoother that way.

For the meantime, jumping through legal flaming hoops is a pretty exciting sport...

Thanks for the reply. Meph-Addict is a great name.. Agree Coffestopheles sounds pretty lame.

I love that stuff. Maybe my favorite Avery beer to date...or at least not far behind the almighty Avery 13.
The base stout and coffee notes come together almost too well. I don't care what you call it as long as you make more of it!

Love meph! Get it every chance I can.

For those not familiar with the process, the TTB is stupid government red tape BS. The things I have heard from brewers about the naming process is absolutely ludicrous. Example, at the Yak, they have to call their IPA Himalaya Style IPA, can't call it Himalaya or Himalayan IPA, because that implies the beer actually came from the Himalayas  They have dozens of silly rules, and unfortunately, you have no choice but to play their game how they see fit.

I almost had to stop drinking at 6:15 because of BA Meph Addict. I was standing at the tasting room entrance helping hand out glasses and tickets to try to work off my buzz a little. (It worked.)

    LOVE Meph Addict/Smoffieshtopolis/Whateveryouwannacallit!!!!!!

    Good on you all, Avery!

They don't have any plans to bottle this as of yet....but, I COULD see this making it into the new-ish yearly release series, along with Rumpkin and Uncle Jacob's.

I was asking about Y&Y since you were mentioning TTB problems. Keg collars maybe?

Oh ok, gotcha. No they are not going to start bottling. But, since his beer gets sent to another store, he has to jump through the hoops to sell it there. Meph addict never used to leave the Avery taproom, so they could more or less call it whatever they wanted. But, to leave that tap room and be served at a festival or another bar (like during Stout Month at Mt. Sun) it is being "sold", so it must pass approval.

I'm guessing it's probably long gone, but Lucky Pie (in the old Dixon's downtown) had a keg earlier this week.
They were still listing it as Meph Addict on their chalkboards and Facebook page, but that's probably just because it's what people know it as. I'm potentially going to wander down there this evening, so hopefully (but doubtfully) they might still have some.
