Background. I have a lovely wife and kids and I am the only beer drinker in the house. I love BA and regular stouts. I have been blessed to receive what I think are some very good bottles. I am thinking of going from bigger format bottles (750's and 22's) to smaller format ones 12 oz that are easier for me to drink (when I get the chance to enjoy them). I have been messaged several times about a post inquiring if someone would be interested in 2013 and 2012 Darkness that I have. I have a bunch of other decent to very good bottles as well. (Bruery items, Event Horizon, BASC, Bo & Luke, Fydor's etc)

If I choose to go this route I know I would be more limited in 12 oz selection (at least I think) to things like BCBS (and variants), KBS, Black Note, Bomb (and variants) BBPt5th, WWS, Jackie O's. Am I missing any others? What is a decent exchange rate?

I want to be fair to a trading partner and myself!

Thanks for any help and or insight you can give.

    Cheers!

PS - I'm not sure I am going to do this, but I want to think it through. There are also several larger format bottles, that I am willing to "bite the bullet" on (Backyard, MC and others):grinning:

You pretty much nailed all the 12 oz. semi-easy to trade for barrel aged stouts except one of my absolute favorites which is central waters bourbon barrel stout. I too went down the path of trading big bombers for multiple small bottles so I could stretch out the drinking experience over the winter. Plus I hate committing to bombers let alone barrel aged stout bombers.

As for the "going rate" there really is nothing to go by other than rarity, bottle cost, and actual taste of the beer. It was nice to have a variety of small bottle barrel aged stouts to choose from. Now that I know which one I can't live without (bourbon county brand stout) I'm just going to stockpile a case each fall and ration them til spring.

The best way to try some heavy hitter barrel aged stouts in bomber format is through bottle shares. Otherwise prepare to be over weight and hammered. You have a good strategy, but once you try everything you listed you'll probably go back to bigger bottles. There are just so many more great options with larger bottle format beers.

    Good luck & cheers!

Not really in the same echelon, but you could throw New Holland Dragon's Milk in there too for smaller format bottles. In a very similar boat, by the way, OP. It's just too much of a pain to find the right people/occasion to break out the large format bottles, and I've learned that one on my own is just too much (at least at that ABV). I'll splurge on something new every now and again, but the smaller formats are my bread and butter.

Technically not a stout, but you're leaving out one the best BA Framinghammer and its variants

Work your way through the HOTD offerings. Not really stouts, but delicious just the same

Drink half, cap it, drink other half the next night? Also an option.

Legend of Liquid Brian was actually in 16.9 oz. bottles...and good luck finding any but if you can, worth it! An amazing beer.

Actually not a bad option -- done it more than once. The big boy stouts can definitely take it.

Sure....baffle this old man with logic! I think I need to go to a wine shop and get a couple of caps. I think I will do that for some of my special bottles but I think I still would like some more 12 oz goodness in my life!

    Please keep the suggestions coming!

Just experiment with a nice cheap one to start. I did it semi-recently with a bottle of Stone IRS, and there was almost no difference 24 hours later. Maybe slight carb loss/oxidization, but really hard to discern.
