Sure, that's true. Again, I'm not trying to bash WB. My one and only issue is if employees have said something to customers that they know to be untrue. I'm sure it's exhausting answering the same questions day after day, but it's a small business, that's what you've signed on for. If you don't want to give too much information away, don't, just politely explain why you can't, you don't have to lie to the customers who are excited about your product and want to support your business.

I've asked them questions recently number one answer I get back is I don't know. Could they be telling the truth..maybe..could they be fibbing...maybe.

I understand why they do what they do. If the word slipped out and spread like wildfire they would have hundreds of people outside their brewery waiting for the drop. If space and crowds is what they are trying to advoid then don't let the word spread.

Believe me once it is dropped that word will spread and they will crowds but nothing like it would be if it was a planned date at a certain time.

    Well done Westbrook!

Did you guys consider the fact that the person answering the phone may not know? Is that so hard to believe?

I can't even count how many times I've been given wrong information by a bartender...doesn't make them a liar, just uninformed, lazy, or stupid...usually.

Now I know bottle shop owners who lie to non-regular customers...but let's not get into that here. This thread is worthless. Each new post that isn't a picture of bottles being released should get put in timeout.

That would be a lie, since they haven't decided 100% on what they will do for the release. Remember, there hasn't been a release yet, nor is their a solid plan. People were pissed about Mexican Cake release last year, so they did a silent release followed by more silent releases. Now people whine about silent releases. You just can't please everyone. I think it is pretty clear that when you are doing silent releases, lack of communication is what keeps them silent.

As I said before, employees are not instructed to lie to customers. I think it is disrespectful for you to make this assumption, not just towards the owners, but towards the good employees there (most are hard working and honest, and they wouldn't lie just because they were told to). You must realize the size of the operation and number of employees. There aren't like only 5 people working there. The only way to correct a possible issue with an employee lying on the phone, is to take their name down and report it when it happens. I do this when I call the cable company.

Anyone claiming they were lied to should be specific about the details of the conversation and what the lie was. Sometimes a "lie" is just different people having access to different information.

No he doesn't tell his employees to lie, he just doesn't give them any release info, it's that simple. Also with calling on the phone it's the same thing, they don't know usually. They could say no there is no release today and then an hour later Edward could decide to release something. Makes them sound like a liar but it isn't their fault that they don't have the info. They just have to say something. What do you want? You call them and they just say I don't know? Is it stupid to not let you employees in on information like this? Yes it is but what can you do?

It has just gotten so big with people showing up I think he is just keeping all info to himself. Saves the headache of people leaking info all over the internet

I'm curious as to how many people complaining are actual supporters of Westbrook and plan on drinking their BA cakes, and how many are just one time shoppers looking for trade bait? It doesn't really matter, I just find it amusing that people are getting so angry over a business choosing to do what it wants with it's products. Absolutely no one, not a single person, is entitled to anything from them, yet the majority of this thread's participants act like they deserve hand delivered bottles to their door. It's a good laugh for sure, though I feel bad for Westbrook's employees for having to deal with this nonsense for even a day, much less months on end.

@RDMII is speaking from experience at a bottle shop, and while a different part of the industry (but closely related), answering the phone all day from hordes looking for the latest release is distracting from the core job.

And so tying back to the discussion, Westbrook employees have better things to do than answer the phone with the same type of distraction. Especially so given their small number of employees.

I'm guilty of it - hell, most of us probably are - but I make sure I spend money and practice loyalty at the places I query. I don't get pissed if I can't get an answer or the response isn't accurate. Much like karma, loyalty always comes back at you.

I prefer the silent releases for all breweries. I wish more would do it. It caters to the locals, and avoids the traveling hoards of neck beards that just want to get beer to trade.

I like silent releases, too. But if it's such a hassle for employees (of any business) to answer the phone for questions about a specific product, maybe that business should invest in a phone system capable of playing a short message at the beginning of any incoming call.

"Hello, and thank you for calling Westbrook Brewing. If you're calling for information on Barrel Aged Mexican Cake, we are not announcing any details about the time or date that the beer will be released. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you are calling with other questions, please stay on the line..."

    It's what I'd do, anyway.

I'm half tempted to switch careers and go work at a brewery for the sole purpose of lying to the 1% of beer geeks that take this shit waaaaay too seriously about .rar waelzbro releases. This seems like a tremendous amount of fun I'm missing out on.

And you know what the entitled would do.....stay on the line and ask the person that answers the phone when BA Mex Cake is going to be released, what the limits are, etc. I agree it's a good idea in theory, but the FAQ doesn't stop people, so I just don't see a phone message stopping the calls....maybe a small amount, but entitleds gonna entitle.

So a silent release means that certain people won't have enough time to hire homeless people as mules, amirite?
