Im new here, but have been looking for an appropriate vehicle to express my concerns about Funky Buddha BA Muy Bonita. Has anybody else had any sort of issues with this beer?
I now have opened 2 bottles and both of them have been very off.

The first one almost cleared the room when I opened it due to the stench of raw garbage that immediately filled the room. Easily the worst nose of any beer I have ever smelled. Sulfur, sewage, and even smells of rotten eggs or as if someone had passed gas. The taste was spot on, exactly how it was when I had it on draft at the brewery. Cinnamon, apples, subtle brandy barrel..very nice, but that smell..I literally had to hold my breath to take a sip. Ive never had a beer like this before...it was so painfully delightful.

The second bottle was a gusher. Way over carbonated and started gushing the second we opened it up. Left about 6-7 inches of head and had that usual fungus/sulfur/sewer smell from the first bottle. This one tasted to match the smell..no apples, no cinnamon, no barrel...almost as if someone had literally farted in my mouth.

I love Funky Buddha and have not had an issue with any of the offerings in the past. I wanted to see if I was alone on this one, or if others share my concerns.

    -Cheers

    Joe

You are definitely not alone on this one, Joe. I don't know if FB has made an official announcement yet, but I think they might have a case of the "I" word........

Best bet is to email the brewery direct with your concerns at [email protected]. Ryan and the crew there are some of the nicest and friendliest folks in craft beer. I'm sure they'll do everything they can to help you out. For what it's worth I opened a bottle with friends a couple of weeks ago and did not have the same unpleasant experience you did. It was super boozy but pretty damn good.

I've had two bottles in the past few weeks and both were nothing short of delightful.

I'm sure the crew at Funky will try to do right by its customers.

FWIW...I haven't actually opened any of the bottles I picked up at the release...I'm simply going off what my trading partners have told me. Most of whom I trust the opinion of.

I haven't opened my bottle yet, either, but I have seen one or two folks say similar things.

Reach out to Ryan and the crew at FB, no doubt they'll want to know about it, and can help out. Great folks at the best brewery (IMO) around.

Opened one a few days ago. It gushed, smelled like a third world restroom, and tasted like one as well. I'm being realistic here. I heard stories of similar occurrences prior to opening this bottle, of at least 1 of 3 of those describing factors, but I ended up with all 3. Completely different from when I had it on draft at the brewery altogether. Kinda bummed I purchased so many now.

we opened one two weeks ago and i can't say that i remember anything that bad about the smell. certainly if it smelled like farts, i'd have remembered that. the only thing off-putting about it for me was that it seemed over-carbed but it didn't gush when we opened it. the taste seemed on par for what FB was going for.

I have not opened my bottle yet, but the 3 bottles I sent out to my brothers and friend were reported to be very good. All I heard were great flavor, no talk of off putting smells. I hope I'm not the unlucky one! I'm feel bad for you poor experience.

Don't you think that the "appropriate vehicle" would be to contact the brewery before putting it out in a public forum? I guess everyone's "appropriate" is different though.

Maybe he didn't want to scare the brewery if it was just a 1-off occurrence? That was my original thought.

These beers are unfiltered and unpasteurized. I believe that leaving them get hot (summer time here in Fla.) for a long period of time could get some thing started in the bottle that could cause those various conditions.
    Just saying.........................

Just popped our bottle. No 3rd world restroom here....nothing but absolutely joyous Apple Crumble aromas. The taste is even better. This one is amazing. So...if any of you have bottles that you don't want to chance being nasty, feel free to trade them to me!!

A stable, un-infected beer won't become nasty in heat. Heat won't help it, but getting something going would have had to be in there to cause people to have issues.

Barrel aged beers are a gamble though, so theres the risk for all parties.

My group has opened two over the last two weekends and the colorful descriptions of the foul smells people have used already are no exaggeration. Taste was still good but it was tough to raise the glass anywhere close to my nose. Also very carbonated upon opening.

Sounds like a few folks stashed their bottles in the trunks of their cars, then stayed at the brewery a little too long.

All of mine have been great. One left to open in the fridge. I'm hoping for greatness.
