I never said I had any information.

The sheer number of barrel aged beers coming out from all sorts of breweries makes me suspect some of the provenance claims might not be wholly accurate. I've heard others say the same thing as @iguenard notes above, that for some rarer whiskeys, it would seem that more barrels are being used to age beer than may have ever been produced for the distiller. If as you say barrels are getting very expensive and harder to find, it makes me even more suspicious.

That said, I really don't care too much. A beer could be aged in Seagrams 3 Star barrels for all I care, if such barrels existed and if it were good, I would be happy to drink it. I'm certainly looking forward to trying the new LTM beer. Their baltic porter is excellent. They never disappoint.

I find the notion of making a big deal about which bourbon brands barrels were used for aging beer a bit silly. Most bourbon is blended. Hundreds to thousands of barrels go into a batch of most bourbons. These barrels can very greatly in flavour, even if they were from the exact same distillate. They could be stored in the same rickhouse on different floors and this can greatly impact the flavour of the bourbon in each barrel.

I find it hard to believe that Heaven Hill had a barrel of bourbon that was aged for 40 years.....I guess its possible, bit no one would do it intentionally. The angels share would be 90% of the juice. There would be nothing left in the barrel.

There isn't really a barrel shortage....just an increase in demand for barrels. Bourbon is booming and production keeps increasing.

Looks like BCBS Rare this year was aged in some 'lost' 33-35 year old Heaven Hill barrels.

    http://louisvillebeer.com/beer-events/rare-bourbon-county-brand-stout-and-heaven-hill-dinner/

I've been to Heaven Hill and a bunch of other distilleries, I guess it's possible to 'lose' some barrels.....these places don't appear to have the most sophisticated tracking systems...I still find it hard to believe.

I wonder if these barrels were displaced as a result of the fire in '96:

Or maybe they inherited them when they purchased Bernheim distillery?!? It would be interesting to know what happened to these barrels.

There sure seems to be a lot of fear mongering in the beer world, I don't doubt that the demand for bourbon barrels has increased, making the more expensive and therefore the beer more expensive. I've also seen a lot of other breweries use other barrels, like wine ones, rim, tequila, gin, etc. Not everything needs to sit in a bourbon barrel, as much as I love it, I find's it's a bit over done at times Imperial Stouts in bourbon barrels is great, but in Red Wine barrels it can be even better.

I'm gonna guess it's like hop contracts, places will sign on for long term supply but demand will keep up. Right now the demand for bourbon is through the roof, so that will help keep the barrel supply going, it just won't get cheaper.

True enough. I find I am more intrigued by the diversity of barrel types now than ever before. The Calvados barrel aged La Calvadeuse was a real treat and along with Bring out your Dead has opened my eyes to how great different beers can be in different types of brandy/cognac barrels. Another reason i am looking forward to the LTM beer.

Oh yeah, so many other options out there. I love what Deschutes does with their multi-barrel aged beers, makes for a really unique experience. There's only so much you can do with a Bourbon Barrel, some do it great, others just ok.

I am going to Montreal this Thursday Novemer 12 thru Sunday and will be going through VT if there is someone willing to trade BA Peche Mortal for something wanted out of VT or I have some Treehouse, Second Fiddle Heady or something else from HF or elsewhere let me know. I prefer an IP and I am staying at the Marriot Spring Hill Suites in Old Town.

We just bought some more Heaven Hills barrels 2 weeks ago. Cost is 65% more than last year, but has more to do with the CAD dollar than anything. No issues in terms of supply either, and we have been offered other barrels from other suppliers too.

For Canadian brewers, the $ is going to have a massive impact. Any import ingredients will cost more, but at least will encourage some more home grown stuff too.

Great to hear Peche is back! I wish DB and BB would make it down to the states via distribution, but I won't hold my breath. I'll just have to hope someone who is able to buy them might be willing to trade with someone from the US who has easy access to many of the best IPA's in the world. And hopefully that person would PM me to discuss further?

Last year I arrived 1h30 before opening and there was 20-30 persons in front of me (Outside in the freezing cold). When it was my turn to order a lot of things weren't available (BA Péché Mortel, older vintages, etc.).

So if you go, go there early. And if you don't plan on maxing out your allocations, please PM me, I can't make it this year and would really like to get my hands on some of those beers.

Watching on FB as they're supposed to announce bottle limits. I believe last year was 4 bottles and i still managed to get shut out. Gonna try to get there as early as possible and bonus, the line is inside this time around.

Anyone go to this today? I see some people on FB really unhappy about not getting despite getting there really early. What happened? were the bottle limits too high or something?
