Well, looks like it's my turn...headed back to Bamberg (via Munich) on 27 June. Anyone who has been recently have any major "discoveries" they'd like to share? Also, is it wrong that I am as excited, if not more excited, about that first Mass of Augustiner at the Keller as I am about my first Schlenkerla?

Probably a silly question, but I assume you read this board?

Not as regularly as I should. Good call. I'll consult it more as the date approaches.

Besides all the usual suspects (Schlenkerla, special, mahrs, klosterbrau, fassla), I love cafe Abseits... And the new exit from the bahnhof makes the walk so much shorter... Have you tried Drei Kronen in memmelsdorf? Easy by bus.. Good stuff.... Prosit!

What? HB, I thought I'd be seeing this post around the Lenten season. I would tell you to enjoy your trip but I already know that you will.

Plan right now is to reserve our usual spot in Schlenkerla for each of the 4 nights. Day trips planned (by bike) include: Loop 1: Bamberg --> Reundorf (Brauerei Müller/Schmausenkeller) --> Hirschaid (Brauerei Krauss) --> Bamberg
Loop 2: Bamberg --> Bischberg (Brauerei zur Sonne) --> Muehlendorf (Brauerei Mühlenbräu) --> Bamberg
Loop 3: Bamberg --> Rossdorf (Brauerei Sauer) --> Wernsdorf (Schiller/St. Georgenbräu Keller) --> Bamberg
In Bamberg we want to hit Klosterbräu, Spezial Keller, and Greifenklau. Options are a loop through Memmelsdorf and Merkendorf and/or a trip down to the Kellerberg near Forchheim.

No Fastenbier, but there will be this: http://www.schlenkerla.de/rauchbier/sorten/sortene.html#kraeusen ... and it's Bayerischer Anstich as well. Prost!

Their Kräusen is good, too! (<--uh, although you probably know this already) I think I've had their entire line-up at this point...the Märzen, the Fastenbier, the Kräusen and the Weizen (just a sip) all vom Fass, and the rest in bottles. They have a killer line-up, for sure. As an aside, based on one of your posts I "liked" the Bier Aus Franken FaceBook page, and now every day I see picture after picture of awesome beer that is not sold in Heidelberg, where I live. So I guess I have mixed emotions...

    Edited 'cause I'm dumb.

Sounds good, but if you can, get over the the Hallerndorf Kreuzberg Kellers and nearby Roppelt's Keller in Stiebarlimbach (you can walk down the hill from the Kreuzberg). Also, between Stiebarlimbach and the Eggolsheim train station is Brauerei Witzgall and their Keller (only open weekends, I think). I recommend them all highly.

Based on my recent trip - which I'm about 75% through writing the report on I have nothing to add, other than it's worth the 15 minute bus trip out to Memmelsdorf if you haven't been

Of the above - Krauss in Hirschaid was excellent, proper old style pay at the window beer garden. One of the brewing staff there was drinking at another table and came to chat about the beers, and some of the locals were intrigued with 'the strangers' and we had a few laughs over English football together in broken English/German!

In Bamberg - Klosterbrau was excellent, Greifenklau - terrible. Worst service I have ever received in Germany. We were there for the best part of 2 hours and only drank 2 beers - not through want of trying and the food was mediocre at best! It was a busy Saturday night (8.30pm-10.30pm) granted, but I've been to Germany on many a busy Saturday night. They can manage it in the beer halls of Munchen, so why not here! Will not return to this one, plus it's a bit of a hike away from the others.

    Forchheim - cheapest beer I've had in many a year. E1.80 for 0.5L !!!!

Glad you enjoyed Hirschaid; the food there is top-notch as well. As for Greifenklau, I know the service there can be terrible (especially outside)...but it can pretty much anywhere in Germany. Still, I understand your frustration. Nevertheless, the place is a sentimental favorite, as me and my buddy lived pretty much right across the street at one point and were in there nearly every night. But yea, the food isn't good either.

Considering Forchheim, and will most likely try to get down there actually. The Kreuzberg/Kellerberg is too good to pass up. Would also like to hit the places in town (especially at those prices!).

When Greifenklau is busy, don't they allow you to buy your beer at the window? I recall doing this, but it might have been during their Bockbieranstich.

By the way, the big hill with Kellers near Forchheim is called "Kellerwald". I have not heard this one called a Kreuzberg (no church at the top, as far as I know).

I did look out for this, but only noticed the serving staff at the window. If I had seen other drinkers I would have been straight there to save effectively an hour of sitting around !!!

Oh well. Yes, I have had very slow service there. Last time I was there, I was ignored a long time while people at the table across from me were getting a lot of attention. When I finally flagged the girl waiting on that table, I was informed that she was not the server for my table! Different concept of service than in the US, that's for sure, but that is part of the charm.

One of the (many) reasons I love the self-service option they have at Augustiner (Munich and Salzburg)!

I couldn't even manage to find a time when Greifenklau was open. They seemed to change their hours and days they were open on the fly when I was there last Summer. We wife and I hiked up there on 3 consecutive days only to find they were either completely closed, or they had changed their operating hours that same day.

Anyone have any experience with visiting Kaiserdom? I know they're more of a bottle exporter, but I was curious if it's worth trekking out there.

Just got an invitation from Matthias Trum of Schlenkerla to join him for lunch at the tavern on the 29th. Hoping that the wait staff sees us with the boss and treats us with a bit of respect on the other nights we plan to be there (i.e. they don't yell at us; as any German will tell you, not being yelled at is praise enough). Prost!

That is always the tricky part in Germany, isn't it? Enjoy your trip and tell Herr Trum he has a satisfied customer here in Heidelberg!
