I remember the kettles are Huppmann, like Sierra Nevada and now Bells. I did not see who made the tanks and the open fermenters when I was at NG.

I know that the Two Women are Deb Carey and Sabine Weyermann. Have had it a number of times and there is a bottle of that in the beer frige.

Didn't realize you were talking equipment, and you must not have realized I was talking malt. But I do realize that NG probably doesn't use Weyermann malt exclusively... I just wish they did. :grinning:

Anyone here have any connection to the Ambrausianum? I've always wondered how they got going and if they were motivated by the scene in the US, or if they just happened to go a similar route.
For better or worse, their beers were different from everyone else's in spite of their fairly traditional style line-up. Plus, the look of the place screamed Ft Collins or Portland more than Bamberg.

Yep. No Wi-fi or other access in the vacation apartment, but I should be able to find something. Just set up the tour at Weyermann for the 2nd of July.

I'm going to be too busy analyzing and taking notes on my 2 oz. pours in the snifter I'm planning to carry around with me...

I know we're talking Franconia here, but many beer bars and brewpubs in the US do it all the time. Gotta get those old-timers on the ball! :grinning:

To the actual point, I begged and pleaded for a 1/2 liter of the Blonde Bock at Forschungsbrauerei because I'd already had a liter of their Helles -- they finally relented and broke the rules for me. I guess that's equivalent to a 2 oz. pour in Bavaria! :grinning:

Was kidding, of course. I plan to keep y'all posted.

Wonder how a 2 oz. pour tastes out of a Masskrug?

I can genuinely see getting kicked out of Schlenkerla for that!

I'm guessing I might not know where to look, but I've had a hell of a time finding free wi-fi in Germany. The T-Mobile and O2 stuff is everywhere, but all of that requires an account or at least a credit card.
On my last trip I ended up just getting an AT&T international data plan for the month.

Apparently the best spots for free wi-fi are all the U.S. chain shops/restaurants: McDonalds, Burger King, and Starbucks. For phone service I had AT&T unlock an old cell phone of mine and I plan to purchase a SIM card there for local calls. Otherwise it's Skype through wi-fi spots. Many Ferienwohnungen will have WLAN, but not the one I reserved this time: http://www.wolff-bamberg.de/.

I could find almost no free wi-fi in Germany either. Most people I have talked to say that Germans are very afraid to offer it because the laws are such that if someone does something illegal (e.g., illegal downloads) on your wi-fi, you are responsible. I cannot verify this, but it is what I was told.

Just a small tip for you fans of the German brewing tradition: I learned in Oberbayern that you can order a "Schnitt". This is a larger glass where only one pour is executed, usually resulting in 1/2 beer and 1/2 foam. A classical method of getting a less than a normal sized beer quite quickly.

I was going to mention this as well. I have been at Kellers near Bamberg where only 1 Liter Maß were served but where they would give you a Schnitt for your last drink (usually somewhere between a half and 2/3 pour) if you asked for it.

Love the Schnitt (in fact, back in my college days in Bamberg we used to talk about getting "Schnitt-faced"). And, yea, rules are: (1) it has to be your final beer of the night, and (2) you have to have ordered one whole beer before you can get a Schnitt.

Another interesting tidbit: Schlenkerla got rid of the Schnitt in their tavern back in the 1990s...and the decision made the local newspaper it was so controversial.

Uh... are you paying for a whole beer when you get half foam?
