i've had quite a few just convos drop off when i start to make a breakdown of bottles and price/value for everything involved. i always try to go $4$ and i've never had a trade go bad with that as the foundation. people who hold their bottles at that magically higher value a few bucks more than what they paid for no reason other than they can are who i try to avoid, and those peole usually make their objectives clear right when the negotiations start.

I don't think you did anything wrong in this case. If nothing was shipped, or nothing was bought already, then no harm done.

To play devil's advocate though, just because the brewery said "the price should be X", doesn't necessarily mean that is what the guy paid for it. Obviously stores have mark ups and as we've all seen, some have crazy ones...there is a thread in the mid-Atlantic forum right now about $100 bottles of Westy. I've seen bars that sold bottles to go of BCS Cherry for $30 and 3F Hommage for $40-60; those are crazy mark ups from what you could buy them for at the breweries or even some stores when they were released, but people would probably jump to trade for them at those $4$ prices. A little tough to judge this without knowing the beers and prices discussed.

In the end, I think you were fine to back out, and if I were him, I would certainly not begrudge you for it and would not try to call you out.

I've had 3 people in the last 3-4 months where we were in discussions, sometimes for days, on a trade, only to find out they drank the beers last night because they didn't hear from me for 6 hours...perhaps this is the new way of backing out of trades.

Right, but he was picking it up from the brewery. It's actually cheaper elsewhere.

Had a late night trade agreed upon, addresses exchanged, both of us agreed to ship within the next two days. Got up in the morning and had a message from the guy saying he got an inbox full of messages overnight and was going to go with one of them, possibly IP. Can't blame someone for wanting to save on shipping, I guess.

Haha, it was a bar, but it actually existed years ago. Can't remember if it was $40 or $60 though.

^^^^ this! And I'd add that jerk to my no trade list. I haven't run into many people trying to win yet. But those who did have been moved outside my "circle of trust".

    You're good.

Someone being found out as lying about $4$ is legit reason to back out, even if add.'s are changed.

I may be in the minority, but if dishonesty is discovered at any stage of a trade prior to tracking #'s sent, back out. I know I would, and I wouldn't actually care if folks thought I was wrong to do it.

What was the total price differential between what he quoted you and what the brewery actually charges? I'm curious how big of an asshole we have floating around out there...

while he may not be a bad trader, I see why people want him outed. If this is how the guy operates I am sure the majority of us would not want to trade with him. Or at least have a heads up to know to check the prices he is throwing out there. Outing someone is not just for "bad traders", but traders the community would rather not deal with.

This is a slippery slope. Now you are getting into opinions about what constitutes a bad trader. To me, a bad trader is someone who does not come through on his/her end of a deal. It is up to me to do due diligence on the fairness of a trade

Here are my thoughts of backing out in the circumstances mentioned

    1. Addresses Exchanged: While not cool, this is ok under extreme personal circumstances or if your trading partner is acting shady or making you feel uneasy about the trade
    2. After beers have been bought: Only ok if your trading partner is being shady or maybe you suspect they haven't really bought the beers. If it is due to your personal circumstances then you should send the person a little care package once you get whatever the problem is fixed, just to be nice.
    3. After Shipping: There is no backing out now. Period. (Unless a damaged exception pops up before you ship)
    4. Natalie Portman: No freaking way, I'd love to have a celebrity baby mama
