Understand your point, but I would advise that if one finds this too boozy, just let it age 6 + months and you'll really see it smoother and more flavorful. It's been the same with this beer for several years...good fresh..better after some aging IMO.

That may be. Buttttt, with a Scotch Ale as good as Scotty Karate being available right now I just don't see the point.

    To each their own .

Scotty karate is damn good, a barrel aged version would give BB a run for it's money. Not sure where you are in MI, but if you have access to Dragonmead, Erik the Red is another good scotch ale.

I've yet to see Erik the Red in the wild but I had their Under The Kilt and thought that specific bottle was a good candidate for infection.

Either that or it just naturally tastes like steel reserve did a collaboration with a low class brewery that makes a low class brown ale.

Scotch Ales/Wee Heavy are just a great style of beer! Start off with Scotty Karate, Old Chub (on nitro), Dirty Bastard, or one of many others. Then move up to the barrel-aged ones like Backwoods Bastard, which is near the top of my list along with Central Waters BB Scotch Ale and Revolution Gravedigger Billy.

I think I got them mixed up, under the kilt is the scotch ale. It is a good scotch ale, you may have had a bad bottle. I would not call dragonmead world class by any means but they make some good beer.

I've had just about all the major ones aside from Old Chub. Even had the Sam Adams Imperial Wee Heavy ( not very common )

Scotty Karate takes first for me, probably followed by Skull Splitter. I'd like to get ahold of the AleSmith Wee Heavy but I'm terribly lazy and driving to Ohio requires motivation

Just tried it for this first time tonight. I just picked up a 4-pack at work, ours came in on Halloween. It definitely lives up to the hype. It's far and away the best bourbon barrel aged beer I've ever had. Perfectly balanced. An outstanding brew.

Yes, their Wee Heavy is good, but I thought it was available in MI? ( seekabrew.com )
AleSmith has been distributed in IL for awhile, but only recently was it available in Chicago and the surrounding area.

Interesting...I checked the site and it indeed says AleSmith gets full distribution here.

I've never seen one of their beers anywhere in MI. Maybe it's recent? I asked my local shop owner a few months ago about it and he said it wasn't available in Michigan. I'll call the brewery tomorrow to see whats up.

Great local shop in Oswego (BJ's Wine & Spirits) has it today, so it should be everywhere this week.

Picked it up today still not as good as Wulver or Gravedigger Billy but a solid boozy beer this year.
