Grape & Gourmet recently responded to a question about the availability of Backwoods Bastard in our area, stating that it was likely we wouldn't see any Backwoods at all this year because of a distributor change for Founder's. Does anybody have any more info on this? I really hope this isn't true. I don't have enough 2014 to get me through the next year!

I have no info on this but that is really disapointing if true, I was hoping to come across some soon. Seems kinda weird also since Harvest ale landed like 2 weeks ago (still some in norfolk) along with Dark pennance/FBS, etc. a little earlier.

Yeah. Honestly all of the Harvest we got is what still has me holding on to hope.

Were you guys previously served by Hops and Wine down in those parts? If so, than Loveland in Richmond has that distro now. They bought the Virginia (at least central VA, maybe more?) rights to several breweries. This may not bode well for you with regard to Bell's either since they also assumed their distro here in central VA. I'd reach out to them and see what they say before pitchforks come out though.

All I've heard is "it still hasn't been allocated yet" - last time I heard that was for KBS. I didn't think BWB was a tough one to get - I saw it on shelves well into winter this year.

However, might this distributor shake up explain why Bell's 30th was tougher to find than things like the Planet series?

Honestly, I don't really follow who distributes to this area much. Maybe I should start.

For sure it wasn't hard to get at all last year. My concern is that this area might not see it at all.

As far as 30th goes, it was really limited in the Northern VA too, so it was more than just a Hampton Roads thing.

This is especially interesting considering I just saw a package available this week in Williamsburg -- every one of the Bell's planet series is available. That may be a case of the store hanging onto them one by one rather than the distributor, though.

I'll jump start you - Chesbay (owned by Reyes) is your Miller/Coors house and Hoffman is your AB house. Hoffman does most all the local stuff (VA stuff - DBB, HW, etc.,.)

Just hit VA Beach today. I snagged a 4pk to add to the vertical. Cheers!

That is definitely the case of them holding onto stuff. When they opened in February they threw up stuff that had been dropped the previous summer (like Mars) and things like 2014 Backwoods Bastard which had come out a few months earlier. I called numerous times and was told they didn't get any Bell's 30th though. If they don't get any BB I'll be really surprised though.

But shouldn't the fact that they are putting things on the shelves that were one-offs released before they opened suggest that they are getting things that the distributor was holding onto? I'm by no means an expert on distributor/bottle shop relations, I'm legitimately curious. Either way, if it wasn't for that particular shop putting some harder to find older bottles on the shelf I wouldn't have been able to grab a bottle of 5 Monks a few weeks ago. I hope they keep it up! It's cool to go in there and find such unexpected gems.

If you're talking about HOTD, then no, they were held onto by DOG street I'm sure.

This, they'll sometimes pop up with something that they've cellared for a year or two (like they're selling 2013 and 2014 Founders Imperial Stouts). They held on to one of each to sell gift sets.

Also scored some Backwoods today so pretty happy about that, and grabbed one of those Bell's 30 @William_Navidson mentioned so pretty good day. I thought it had come and gone so pretty happy I can try it. Really bummed I had to rush out and grab BB so fast. It's one of my favorites and it was pretty easy to find last year.

Yeah that makes sense that Dog Street would have them around. I hadn't even considered that.
