So last night I was looking forward to reducing my inventory a bit and trying some new beer. Things didn't go as planned.

First up - Stout Hearted from Justice Brewing. It's not even in the database and I can't add it because I didn't end up drinking any of it. It gushed like a ************ as soon as I opened it, sprayed yeasty sludge across my kitchen, and proceeded to empty itself in my sink. Maybe this was the last bottle on the line and it got the dregs from the end? It seemed to be about half yeast half beer.

Second attempt at new beer - Pikop Andropov's Rushin' Imperial Stout. This one didn't gush, but it sure didn't taste very good. Something was clearly wrong. All sorts of sour fruit and smoke, and not in a good way. Had to drain pour it after about 1/3 of the glass. Infected? There are certainly some other reviews that suggest that. I have two more bottles too. Oh well.

So I decided to stay upstairs for the rest of the night and settled in for a Lagunitas Sucks and some homebrew. Shit could be worse.

The first time I had Alesmith Speedway, I found a significant amount of sourness for the first 5-10 minutes, and I suspected it might have been infected, too... but as it warmed, the sourness went away, replaced by the roastiness and all of the other character I expected from the beer. Maybe you didn't let the Pikop breathe long enough?

I attempted it for a solid half hour. It was also straight from the cellar, currently ~52 degrees.

Did a word search on all the Pikop reviews, and 'sour' and 'sour green apple' popped up several times going back 10 years and 53 reviews, so you definitely aren't alone in what you experienced. Based on that, I'd think it's just a characteristic of the beer, rather than a case of infection.

Yeah, I saw that as well. Two more bottles in my cellar. I'm (morbidly) curious to see if they're all like that.

I actually enjoy nights like these.

If I start out accidentally with a terrible &/or infected beer, I'll often go diving into the back of the fridge cellar for things I've been loathe to drink becauase I hate the brewery, it was a 9 month old pale sent as an extra, it's reported infected, etc. I've found those nights extremely enjoyable, especially when something is unexpectedly good, & if not, inventory is indeed reduced (& my sink gets a workout, too).

or like the OP, when you can relax with some homebrew and think, "shit, at least what I make is better than all THAT!"
