I picked up a 4 pack of tallboy IPAs from a smaller liquor store on my way home. Upon opening the first one, I found zero carbonation, no hop presence whatsoever and a very murky appearance. I dumped it and cracked the next one to the same results, but I tried it and dumped it. It is obviously old and shame on me for buying an undated IPA.

I contacted the store to let them know that their stock of this stuff probably wasn't in great shape and asked if I could bring back what I had left. He passed on my offer and told me IPAs aren't highly carbonated and craft beers aren't carbonated like Bud Light is. At this point, I decided I will just go elsewhere in the future.

In an attempt to help the brewer and distributor out, I then contacted them both privately. The brewer said it's probably old and sorry for my bad luck in picking out their beer, which there isn't much they can do once it leaves their hands. I am still waiting on a response from the distributor.

I don't want anything at this point, except to be able to walk into a store and not buy shitty beer.

Move on. It will happen again if you are not careful. Your "no hop presence" comment however makes me feel as though you might be the one with the issue. Hops do not get erased

That is terrible customer service and the person at the store is a fool.

Hops do indeed fade. The fresher the better.

Someone brought this up in an earlier thread. When you say "tallboy," you mean 16oz can, right? Sometimes the canning machines can incorrectly put the tops on, resulting in the beer getting messed up. It's usually an extremely limited occurrence, and very difficult to catch. So it sounds like just bad luck, and I wouldn't give up on the brewery. Which one is it, btw? Guy at the store sounds like an a-hole. Better off going elsewhere.

If all parties were unresponsive and/or unconcerned, that's a bummer. If a brewery has no qualms with selling old beer that tastes bad, the market will soon sort them out. As for the liquor store, you can (try to) sort them out by no longer buying there.

Happens to the best of us. Old IPAs suck. I never expect a retailer to take back old IPAs though, it's my fault for not looking at the date. Breweries however are pretty awesome about this, Bells sent me a bunch of swag for letting them know about some old two hearted.

You can walk into a store and not buy shitty beer, but you can't get rid of all the shitty beer in a store. It's up to you to stay informed, whether that entails a certain beer or ensuring it is fresh enough. If you rely on the retailer to do this for you, you're gonna have a bad time.

My personal policy when buying ipas is if it doesn't have a bottle date I don't buy it.I always check bottle dates to protect myself from buying stale beer.

Moral of the story: don't buy undated beer.

I think my reply might have been something along the lines of "so you have no idea what you're talking about, huh?"

Also, I would think a beer would have to be SUPER old for it to have no carbonation on account of age. I agree with @BH712 that a more likely culprit for the carbonation is an out-of-calibration canning line.

Totally agreed. But given the number of threads that seem to pop up on BA, I'm no longer taking this ability for granted, but instead view it as a super power.

Maybe I'll stand outside the local beer store in a cape - "good citizen, you should return that beer. You as a mortal cannot possibly know this, but it is un-dated"

Incorrect. Time (several months) will severely diminish hop presence.

Yup. Also, the smallest dent near the top of the can can do it. I dropped a 4-pack of 16oz IPA's recently, picked it up and examined them and determined that only two of them had tiny dents on the lip, but no drippage. when I opened those two up they were both flat. I would never have noticed the dents had I not dropped it myself.

I think it depends on the situation. If it's a "best by" date and the retailer has sold you an out-of-date brew, I think they have an obligation to take it back.

If it's a "bottled on" date, things get more complicated. If a brewery mentions on their website that a certain beer should be consumed within X amount of months, and that time had passed when the store sold it to you, then again, I think the retailer has an obligation to take it back.

Just because caveat emptor was mentioned in a Brady Bunch episode, it doesn't mean all businesses should get away with such practices.

Unfortunately no dating on the can and I had an internal conversation with myself for a solid 2 minutes if I was really going to buy an IPA that I have no idea how old it was. My smarter internal self lost out and I lost my $12. It was Finch's Threadless IPA, which I have never bought their products before and probably won't return to again.

That store would lose my business with an answer like that.

That sucks because Threadless is probably the only good beer from Finch's. I used to live in Chicago and gave them several honest tries.

Well at least you can read.....I bought a case of bombers earlier this month, best by August 30th 2013. my eyes stopped at August. I've been back to the retailor as it was obviously my own fault, funny they tried to push their "on sale" beer to me again. Lesson learned and I only lost $25 or so.

@rdailey76 it is up to you but my conversation with the store person would have been: I will no longer shop at your store and I will tell everybody that will listen to me to not shop at your store.

Disrespectful customer service should have consequences.

    Cheers!
