Do you drain pour on site? What is the preferred method for on-site drain pours?

Brewpubs are a newer thing in NC--I would not say they have really taken off. Although I don't frequent the chain ones much, I have not found the few I have visited to be places where most serious craft beer drinkers go. As has been stated, they are a step up from the typical light lagers and the larger ones NEED to appeal to a broad population to stay in business. There are too many other places with very impressive lists and good food for folks looking for "the good stuff."

A couple of Nanos--Trophy in Raleigh have Pizza and great beer but are so small, it is hard to put them in a conversation like this.

As far as bad craft breweries--new ones just won't make it--just too much competition.

Ah, that was to utilize a common term for a beer that was/is undrinkable. Did I technically "drain pour" no, I left 3/4 full glasses scattered all over the table top and bar.

    this seems .... unlikely.

if BA says it's bad then it should be shut down.

Most of these places aren't likely catering just to the BA crowd anyway right? Looking at the spectrum of beer drinkers, some small brew pub with mediocre offerings may likely seem like the second coming to anyone that hasn't tried much craft beer.

Ah yes, the glass half empty method (AKA the glass half full method). Most fiendish; forcing them to drain pour their own beer.

Woah miscommunication, I am a BIG fan of Jay/Jason and Mike's beers at Bacchus. So sorry to see Jay has moved out of area and returns only to brew. I meant killing it as in just doing spectacularly.

The brewpub I have a problem with rhymes with Gilded Spotter.

Big fan of the entire scene that is growing around here, great time to be a fine beer lover here now, as our area gets back to its real beer brewing roots. And then some.

I agree with you except that it also sometimes happens that the established ones are mediocre too, yet successful financially because they got their tentacles in the market when it was young, usually few competitors as you said, much of the customer base doesn't know any better beer-wise, and maybe they do other things right - decent food, enormous number of big TV's, attractive servers, etc. I know that is quite a critical set of points to make, but I happen to think those other things matter a lot for a brewpub or beer bar. For me, I'm paying for an entire experience when I go out so more things matter than just the beer (though, bad beer is can be a veto for me for ever going somewhere).

The only special bomber I've had is Smashed Pumpkin and it's not half bad. I definitely enjoyed it. Gotta give credit where credit is do. What are the other decent bombers worth trying?

Rock Bottom, seriously? The Rock Bottom in Mpls has been and remains a stellar producer of beer. I've been to a handful of others throughout the US and they have all ranged from good to fucking awesome. That said, each individual location brews different beer designed by their respective brewer, so I suppose some locations suffer.

Well, there is a brewery in Michigan called "Bad Brewing." Haven't had their beer, but it must be pretty bad!

JK, in all honesty, I can't figure out why quite a few breweries in SE MI are still open, not to name any in particular out of some modicum of respect (except Atwater, their beer is disgusting).

Without a doubt standards are on the rise throughout the country and perhaps the world. Especially in regards to food and drink. Maybe dude lives in a really really horrible place?

This was the first thing to pop into my head. I had the misfortune of driving through that town about three years ago and being suckered in by the sign. No samples unless I paid $5 for a tasting glass. What's the worst that could happen for $5? Well, after discovering that I hated every singe thing on tap, I went to pay, and was hit with the old $10 minimum for credit cards, at which point I had to actually buy terrible beer to avoid just telling the nice old lady how horrible the beer was. As I checked out, I was astonished to see people enthusiastically getting growler refills.

Now, I am not the kind of person who cheers when an athlete goes down with an injury (not even if he plays for the Packers). I try to be sympathetic to people's hometown pride, and all that. But I do admit to experiencing some satisfaction when I read about that brewery burning down, and even some regret to hear that it reopened.

Horny Goat. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their beer is God-awful. But they have indoor volleyball leagues and video games. So all is forgiven from local idiots.

It doesn't have to be better than BMC. BMC doesn't have the hipster appeal. I have seen brewpubs stay packed by constantly producing beers with all kinds of crazy ingredients, even though most of the beers are poor. Some are diacetyl bombs. Some are fusteclucks of competing flavors. Few are very good. A lousy beer aged on gummy bears still sells.
